'DUDE' WINS BLOOMINGTON FEATURE, HIS SECOND OF THE YEAR By Richard Day BLOOMINGTON, IN (April 21) - Danny Lasoski and Mark Kinser hogged the spotlight in the World of Outlaws' 1995 season opener at St. Augustine Speedway. They did the same Friday at Bloomington Speedway. For the second time in the last three events, Lasoski broke the one- lap record and Mark won the Vivarin Dash, only to have "The Dude" win the main event by less than a car-length. Lasoski opened the festivities by trimming .062 seconds off the one- lap record Andy Hillenburg set at Bloomington's semi-banked, 1/4-mile oval last year. He followed Kinser across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. They started the 40-lap "A" Feature side-by-side on the front row, and Mark took the early lead in the fourth corner as the green flag fell. The race was only 1 1/2 laps old when Dave Blaney stopped the #10 Vivarin J&J on the back straightaway, bringing out the caution flag. Blaney's fuel flow problem was fixed quickly, and he restarted the race at the back of the pack. Two laps later, Tim Engler allowed his #73 Engler Machine J&J to spin in turn two. A collision with Jerrod Hull put both in the pits. As the race resumed, Aaron Berryhill surrendered fourth place with a fourth-corner spin. When the green flag replaced the yellow, Kinser quickly opened a five- car-length advantage. He entered lapped traffic three laps later. Mark, "The Dude" and Joe Gaerte were able to maintain a fast pace in lapped traffic as they raced in the high groove. The caution flag was flying again during the 11th lap when a broken shock on the #1x Hannagan Motorsports Jenkins forced Randy Hannagan to slow on the back straightaway. He was able to restart the race despite a rear- end collision in the third corner. Brad Devereaux, who restarted among the leaders, spun in front of Gaerte as the race resumed. While Gaerte turned a 360 to keep the #77 Cornwell Tools J&J from stalling, Jac Haudenschild wasn't as fortunate. His collision with Devereaux sent the #22 Pennzoil Maxim flipping in the fourth corner. Fortunately for "The Wild Child," his crew quickly replaced his top wing, enabling him to return to the race. He maintained a 10-point lead in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings with a 12th-place finish. Blaney was racing through the field late in the 12th lap when he ran over the bank in turn three, costing him 10th place. Kinser had the #5M Wirtgen Maxim six car-lengths ahead of Lasoski when he caught the backmarkers during the 15th lap. "The Dude" caught Mark the next time around, and took the lead with a low move in heavy lapped traffic in the second corner. Mark was attempting to regain first place midway through the race when "The Dude" threaded the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim between Mike Reinke and Randy Kinser to extend his advantage. Lasoski gained some breathing room early in the 24th lap when Kinser ran over the bank between turns one and two, allowing Gaerte to take over the runner-up spot. Gaerte caught "The Dude" in dense lapped traffic three laps later, but a power steering malfunction kept him from pressuring Lasoski for the lead. "The Dude" was five car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when Mark passed Gaerte for second place late in the 32nd lap. Blaney had raced all the way back into fifth place when he ran over the turn-three bank again with seven laps remaining. Kinser, relentless in his mission to regain the lead, caught Lasoski during lap 38 and was just inches from his rear bumper as they took the white flag. With the partisan, capacity crowd urging him to steal the victory, Mark took the checkered flag half a car-length behind "The Dude." "Mark just got hung up on a lapped car," Lasoski said in victory lane. "It was all I could do to get by him. "We had a little trouble earlier this year, and we're still trying to battle back from it. The crew has been doing a great job, and the car's really been performing well." The victory, his second of the year, pushed "The Dude" into fourth place in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings. "We always seem to be running well here and something happens to us," Mark said. "It seems like we break something, run off the track or get hit by a lapped car. I would liked to have won, but I'm happy to run second." Jeff Swindell, who passed eight cars to finish in third place, received the Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award. Rounding out the top 10 in the main event were Hillenburg, Stevie Smith, Gary Wright, Jeff Shepard, Gaerte, Blaney and Greg Hodnett.
