Craig Dollansky statement for May 24, 2004
Elk River, MN (May 24) - This statement is in regard to the Polydome Princeton National event that took place this past weekend in Princeton, MN on May 21 & 22. Many things have been speculated about this event and this is my view.
On Friday, May 21, the track crew did as best they could to prepare the racetrack for the night after receiving a lot of rain prior to the race. Water was standing on the bottom and holes developed at the entrance of each turn. As it was, the feature began, and after a few laps the 11 of Steve Kinser hit one of the holes in between Turns 3 & 4 and unintentionally got into the 20 of Danny Lasoski, taking him out of the event.
After that red, the race began. While racing with 11H of Paul McMahan for second place, I went into Turn 1 low, caught the grease on the bottom of the track, pushed the front end across the rough part of the track and unintentionally got into Paul. The next day I apologized to Paul. This was short track racing on track conditions that were different than we were accustomed to dealing with.
The next night after leading and racing with the 11K of Kraig Kinser through heavy lap traffic for 36 straight laps, without incident, the yellow flag came out. On the restart, I had a good start and run on Kraig. Going into turn three as I drove under him to take the lead, my right rear rubbed his left front.
I've been in that same situation many times and gave way to the guy who had a run on me going into the corner. I think my fans and competitors know I am a clean racer, and that after seeing the tape of the pass on Kraig, most would agree it was a good pass on a short track.
As to the altercation at the scale, I wish it would not have happened, but it did. I had Steve Kinser in my cockpit, which prompted the statements that I made. First and foremost, I think the incident at the scale was a joke. I was very angry, but stayed in my car and tried to keep out of any confrontation. That was not the time or place for such an altercation.
Secondly, I wasn't too happy about the way Steve handled the situation and said some things out of anger. I take nothing away from Steve's accomplishments, nor do I compare myself to him. I only want to be a successful race car driver. When I started talking about dethroning the King, I am only talking about the 2004 Championship race, and he is the reigning champion. Steve is the King of the World of Outlaws, there is no doubt about it. I have a lot of respect for what he has done and the good he has done for the sport, and I have told him that.
I wish this situation would not have happened, and to the fans that may have been offended over my statements that were made out of anger, I apologize and look forward to putting these events behind me and moving on.
