Mother Nature, One win, a second summarizes Lasoski's week; "The Dude" wins the Preliminary show in drive over Schatz in Topeka

CONCORD, NC (June 20, 2002) -- Mother Nature decided that this was not the weekend for defending Pennzoil World of Outlaw champion Danny "The Dude" Lasoski to sweep the prestigious 97 Country Outlaw Nationals at O'Reilly Auto Parts Motor Speedway in Topeka, KS. Instead, Lasoski and the rest of the WoO teams will return to the track on Monday, June 24th to complete the event. The weekend wasn't a total rainout though, as Lasoski and Donny Schatz put on a stellar battle during Friday night's preliminary, with Lasoski winning by only 0.6 seconds. The win was Lasoski's third preliminary feature win of the season. Then on Tuesday night, June 18th, Lasoski finished second to Steve Kinser in the Bud Carson Memorial at State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City, OK.

The preliminary event in Topeka was a barnburner! After starting the feature in fourth, Lasoski, driving the number 20 Tony Stewart Motorsports / J.D. Byrider machine, followed the fast-moving Schatz through the field. As the pair caught lapped traffic and leader Joey Saldana, Lasoski was able to make a daring drive for the lead, one he would never relinquish. Schatz put on a last lap drive that saw him come up less than a second short of Lasoski at the finish. Lasoski led the last ten laps of the 25-lap feature.

"That's the kind of racing you get on a great race track," Lasoski said. "Jay Lendrum and his whole crew did an outstanding job with this place. You gotta love the kind of racing that the World of Outlaws puts on. We truly are the greatest show on dirt.

"I couldn't believe it when Donny got by me on the bottom," Lasoski said. "Actually, Joey (Saldana) was running pretty good on the top, and I was just kind of following him then Donny got by me. But, he got hung up by a lapped car and we were able to get the lead. I almost got caught behind a lapped car there at the end and I thought Donny might have been able to get something working up top, but we held on."

"The Dude" qualified fourth of the 24 cars that were on hand in Kansas. He finished fourth in his heat race and second to Brad Furr in the second O'Reilly Auto Parts Dash race. The victory earned Lasoski $5,000.

"My car owner, Tony Stewart, has given me a great race team, and all my guys out here work so hard. I'm glad to win here close to home, with American Compressed Steel so close here, and Massey Motorsports as well. Eagle Chassis, Hoosier Tires -- just everyone involved -- does such a great job for me."

On Tuesday, "The Dude" set fast-time for the ninth time this year at State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City, OK. He won his O'Reilly Auto Parts Dash race and then went wheel-to-wheel with the "King of the Outlaws," Steve Kinser, for much of the event. Danny finished second. But, he isstill 30-points up on the 16-time WoO champ in the battle for the championship. Lasoski is going to two straight WoO crowns.

"The Dude" and the rest of the team are back in action for a big three-day show, the Eagle Nationals, at Eagle Raceway in Eagle, NE this weekend. As always, fans can follow the action this weekend via the internet at www.sprintcarnet.com and look for results at www.dannylasoski.com
