MEMPHIS, TN (Oct. 16) -- After last weekend's thrilling victory in Friday's World of Outlaws Cheaper Than Dirt Shootout at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track, Daryn Pittman and his Sherdon Motorsports crew can't wait to make their debut at the high-banked Delta Bowl Speedway on Friday night.
"I'm excited about our first race at Delta Bowl," said Pittman. "Any time you go to a new track, the playing field is a little more even. My father-in-law (Mike Ward) has raced there quite a bit this year and won a bunch so he loves it there. He said it reminds him a lot of Lone Star Speedway (in Kilgore,TX), a high-banked 4/10-mile oval. Any time there's more bank to a track I seem to do better."
"I know Steve (Kinser) has got a great record for winning races the first time the Outlaws visit new tracks (55 times), and we'd like to beat him again like we did last Friday. He's the toughest guy out here to beat, and we just hope to keep him from getting win number 500."
Pittman, who staged an epic battle with the World of Outlaws legend to score last Friday's win, has been the model of consistency since the series returned from the West Coast. He has driven the #21 Hop & Sack/Gaerte/Mopar/GLR sprinter to six top five finishes and eight consecutive top ten runs helping him climb to within 16 points of third place in the WoO season-long standings.
"We've been really strong this past month and that has all of us excited," continued Pittman, the reigning World Series Sprintcar Series champion. "Things have been going so well lately that we've got a shot at third place in the points. Earlier in the year, the guys in front of me seemed to just keep getting farther ahead and now we're closing back in on them. We just want to finish strong and head into next year with momentum."
The 25 year-old native of Oklahoma is having his second consecutive breakthrough season with the Outlaws. Last year he won six "A" feature events, and this season he has won three WoO "A" features along with last Friday's preliminary feature victory. In August, Pittman raced to the biggest win of his career winning the Historical Big One at Eldora Speedway.
"We haven't won as many races as we hoped to, but here lately we've been consistently strong," continued Pittman. "My crew (Joe Gaerte, Glenno Inglis and Bingo Jenkins) has been great all year. We've been running up front for about the past month, and I think we can still pick up a win or two to help us finish with a bang."
This weekend's event will also allow a number of family members to see Pittman in action. His wife's family is from nearby Memphis and will be in attendance. The event also will be a homecoming of sorts for Pittman who gained a lot of experience racing 360's in the Memphis area earlier in his career.
"I think it will be great to have a lot of Mandy's family at the track. I know the trailer will be full of people rooting for us. It's also good for me to return to the area. We made a lot of laps in this area when I was just getting started. When you travel as much as we do, it's nice to race some place that feels like home."
