Swindell Sweeps Channellock Fall Classic By Richard Day GREENWOOD, WI (September 25) - Had Channellock CEO Bill DeArment written a script for the Channellock Fall Classic, he couldn't have cast a better role for Sammy Swindell. The three-time Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion was the star of TNN Motorsports' live telecast, driving his #1 Channellock Stealth to a flag-to-flag victory Saturday at NAPA I-80 Speedway to complete his sweep of the $80,720 event. "The Channellock car was good again tonight," Sammy said. "We're out of the chase for the points championship, so we've been trying some things for next year, and it's worked so far. We have some more things coming, so maybe we'll be able to get a few more before the year's over." While Swindell dominated the action, there were also several subplots taking shape. The $12,000 victory, Swindell's eighth of the season, pushed him to within nine points of fourth-place Stevie Smith in the standings. A pair of runner-up runs for Danny Lasoski, coupled with two ninth-place finishes in the main events for Mark Kinser, allowed "The Dude" to narrow the gap to 21 points in their battle for the series championship. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series remembered fallen hero Kevin Gobrecht, altering its famous Four Abreast parade lap with a missing man formation before the "A" Feature. Many drivers had "G-man, 93" decals on their cars and Swindell remembered Gobrecht in victory lane by replacing his Channellock cap with Amoco head gear. The Channellock Dash featured Swindell and Lasoski pulling slide jobs on each other in every corner of the semi-banked, 4/10-mile oval. "G-man - that one's for you," Lasoski said after earning the pole position by winning the five-lap race. "I'm not too sure he (Swindell) didn't want me to win that one so he could start on the outside." Swindell, who won Friday's Preliminary Feature from outside the front row, confirmed Lasoski's suspicions, saying, "I think starting on the outside is going to be an advantage. That's the place to be." Swindell proved the high groove was definitely the fast lane as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature, steering the #1 to within inches of the fence and opening a big lead during the opening lap. Jeff Swindell followed his brother around the outside line, racing into fourth place from outside the sixth row during the first lap. Jac Haudenschild took advantage of Paul McMahan's lap-two spin in the second corner, passing "The Dude" with an inside move on the back straightaway as the green flag replaced the yellow. Swindell was 3.6 seconds ahead of "The Wild Child" when he entered lapped traffic early in the ninth lap. Tim Shaffer, who started inside the fifth row, steered the #11H Vivarin Maxim deep in the fourth corner to take over second place two laps later. He slid out of the low groove late in the 13th lap, however, allowing Haudenschild and Lasoski to race past. Swindell was 1.7 seconds ahead of "The Wild Child" midway through the race. Lasoski drove the #83 Beef Packers Eagle into second place with an inside move between turns one and two early in the 19th lap, and narrowed the gap to .3 seconds by lap 23. Haudenschild kept the #22 Elden Racing Maxim in the high groove, and was passing Sammy and "The Dude" two laps later when a flat right rear tire caused Jeff Swindell to stop in the fourth corner. Lasoski and Haudenschild exchanged the runner-up spot three times during the next three laps as Swindell opened a comfortable advantage. Sammy was on his way to the checkered flag when Scott Whitworth stopped in turn four with a flat right rear tire, setting up a two-lap dash to the checkered flag. Swindell controlled the final restart while "The Wild Child" and Lasoski took turns passing each other for second place. Sammy was .679 seconds ahead of "The Dude" when he took the checkered flag. "We knew we could run the top during the first part of the race, and then the bottom would come in," Sammy explained. "We just had to try to get a big enough lead that we could hang on when it slowed down toward the end. We kind of got held up there, and that allowed those other guys to close up on us. I thought I could get pretty good restarts there at the end." Joey Saldana finished in fourth place, ahead of Johnny Herrera, Daryn Pittman, Donny Schatz, Stevie Smith, Kinser and 21st-starting Andy Hillenburg. Lance Blevins received his first Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season for pacing the qualifying session with a 14.860-second lap. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series will run a $42,100 event at Lernerville Speedway Wednesday, then sanction the 37th Annual Williams Grove National Open Friday and Saturday.
