BLANEY OUTDUELS KINSER IN HAGERSTOWN OPENER By Richard Day HAGERSTOWN, MD (May 28) - A change of venue - even over state lines - hasn't calmed the intense battle between Dave Blaney and Steve Kinser for supremacy in the northeast. Kinser opened the tour with a flag-to-flag victory at West Virginia Motor Speedway, then the pair split the World of Outlaws' feature races at Williams Grove Speedway. Earlier this month, Kinser won the opener while Blaney took home the $25,000 first prize from Hagerstown Speedway. "The Buckeye Bullet" and Kinser were the only two drivers to lead the Preliminary Feature Saturday night when the World of Outlaws returned to Hagerstown for another double-feature event. Blaney led the final three laps for his fourth victory in a Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout Preliminary Feature this season. "The track was nice and wide," Blaney said in victory lane. "It had two good grooves." "The Buckeye Bullet" earned the right to start the 20-lap feature on the pole by winning the Vivarin Dash. He drove the #10 Vivarin J&J into the lead immediately after the green flag fell, and opened a 15-car-length advantage within three laps. Blaney, who lost the lead Friday at Williams Grove by riding the rim, kept the #10 in the low groove until the final laps in the Preliminary Feature. Kinser, who started the race outside the second row, passed Joe Gaerte during the opening lap, and took the runner-up spot from his second cousin, Ecowater Fast-Time Award winner Mark Kinser, with a back-straightaway pass two laps later. The caution flag, thrown when Larry Skinner spun to a stop in the third corner late in the fourth lap, tightened the field. When the race resumed, Kinser tried to take the lead with a high move between turns three and four, but Blaney held him off. Another pair of cautions - for Phil Walter's third-corner spin and the broken throttle linkage on Andy Hillenburg's #2 STP J&J - kept Blaney from padding his cushion. Two laps after the green flag replaced the yellow, Jeff Swindell passed his Two Winners Racing teammate, Greg Hodnett, for fourth place deep in the fourth corner. Kinser, keeping the #11 Valvoline Maxim in the high groove, took the lead between turns three and four the next time around, and entered lapped traffic midway through the race. "The King of the Outlaws" was on his way around Sid Blandford when he slammed on his brakes to avoid a collision, allowing Blaney to narrow the gap. "The Buckeye Bullet" caught Kinser in the corners during the next few laps, but was unable to keep pace on the straightaways. Three laps later, Bill Case's second-corner spin set up a six-lap dash for the $4,000 first prize. Within seconds after the race resumed, Swindell steered the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim deep into the fourth corner to pass Mark Kinser for third place. Mark returned the favor the next time around. Following two attempts to regain the lead in the low groove, "The Buckeye Bullet" took the high road around Kinser with three laps remaining. He was three car-lengths ahead of "The King of the Outlaws" when he took the checkered flag. When asked about the winning pass, Blaney said, "Steve was in the fast line, so I tried the low groove. Then he dropped low, so I went to the high groove and managed to get by him. "I've lost a couple (of races) recently not knowing which line to run," Blaney added, "so it's nice to win one like this." Mark Kinser finished the Preliminary Feature in third place, ahead of Jeff Swindell, Donnie Kreitz, Jr., Hodnett, Jac Haudenschild, Sammy Swindell, Stevie Smith and Gaerte. Sammy overcame qualifying woes - he was only 14th-quick - and an early four-position penalty to pass nine sprinters during the first 16 laps. Late fuel flow problems in the #1 Bull & Hannah's Jenkins allowed Kreitz, Hodnett and "The Wild Child" to relegate him to eighth place.
