'Dude' Takes Season Opener at Kings Speedway By Richard Day HANFORD, CA (February 19) - Danny Lasoski, Sammy Swindell and Jimmy Carr, major players in the 1998 Amoco Knoxville Nationals, hogged the spotlight when the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series opened its 1999 season before a record crowd at Kings Speedway Friday. Just as they did last August in the most exciting Amoco Knoxville Nationals championship feature in years, Lasoski and Swindell battled for the lead throughout Friday's 30-lap main event. Carr, Lasoski's crew chief last season, raced into third place while making his debut in the #21 Up Front Phone Cards J&J. "Jimmy Carr beat my track record here last fall, and he's been letting me hear about it ever since," Lasoski said following the 13th "A" Feature victory of his Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series career, "so I knew I had to do something pretty spectacular tonight. Jimmy ran third, and I'm happy for him. It's great to win one for (car owner) Dennis Roth in his hometown. "The fuel load going away really brought the car to us later in the race. In the first half, the car just wanted to wheelie. Jerry Russell builds great cars there at Eagle, and I just can't say enough about them. My guys did a super job all night long. Mark Ellis stepped up as crew chief, and Jack Hickman joined our team this year. Our goal is to win the championship this year, and this is a great way to start off." Lasoski got the season off to a rousing start by breaking the single-lap record with a 12.843-second (93.436-m.p.h.) lap around Hanford's semi-banked, 1/3-mile oval. He received the Vivarin Fast- Time Award for his historic effort. Swindell, who passed four cars to finish second in the Channellock Dash, passed polesitter Joe Gaerte for the lead within seconds after the green flag fell. Sammy, winner of three Pennzoil World of Outlaws "A" Features at Kings Speedway, was increasing his advantage when Stevie Smith's #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit bicycled and flipped in turn four late in the second lap. Travis Whitney was also involved in the crash. He and Daryn Pittman joined Smith in the pit area after the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim suffered its second blown engine of the night just before the green flag replaced the red. Craig Dollansky and Kasey Kahne collided on the front straightaway as the race resumed, bringing out the caution flag. The damage to Dollansky's #7 Polydome Gambler kept him from continuing. Swindell controlled the ensuing restart and was 1.3 seconds ahead of Gaerte when he entered lapped traffic during the eighth lap. Carr passed Gaerte for second three laps later with a low move between the first and second corners. Lasoski, who started outside the sixth row, steered the #83 Beef Packers Eagle low in turn one to pass Gaerte for third place early in the 13th lap. "The Dude" continued his run to the front 1 1/2 laps later, taking the low line through turns three and four to pass Carr for second place. Swindell, a half-second ahead of Lasoski during the 18th lap, was battling to maintain the lead three laps later. After a low move through the first and second corners failed early in lap 21, "The Dude" came back to pass Swindell for the lead deep in turn four the next time around. Sammy was unable to keep pace with Lasoski during the final nine laps and was 1.5 seconds behind when the checkered flag fell. The victory the second of Lasoski's career at Kings Speedway. Following Lasoski, Swindell and Carr across the finish line were Fourth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Jeff Swindell, 21st-starting Donny Schatz, Tim Shaffer, Brent Kaeding, defending Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion Steve Kinser, Gaerte and Second NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race Dale Blaney. Mark Kinser got off to a fast start in his first race in the #5M Mopar Maxim, but a flat left rear tire caused him to flip during the Second NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race destroyed the car. He used a provisional to start the "A" Feature, but took only two laps before coasting into the pit area. WoO
