Shane Carson Lands In Knoxville's Victory Lane Once Again

Knoxville, IA -- June 3, 2006 -- Shane Carson has an office now. He's on the phone constantly, making decisions as the VP of Race Operations for DIRT MotorSports. Pictures and memorabilia of his successful career as a sprint car racer and promoter surround him. And no matter where he goes in the world, he's bound to run into somebody he knows.

But as anybody who has driven with him in a rental car knows, Carson's desire to compete hasn't waned even though hasn't raced for a series championship in a few years. Carson, who turns 52 in July, finished third in the World of Outlaws championship standings in 1982 and was the 1978 Knoxville Raceway champion.

So, once a racer always a racer, Carson entered the 14th Annual Master's Classic on Friday at Knoxville Raceway. Carson, who won 24 times in 1978 with Bob Trostle's equipment, worked a deal on Wednesday to pilot Larry Weeks' No. 00 J&J.

After timing in fourth quick on the famed half-mile oval, Carson built a strong lead before hitting traffic with 10 to go. Running the bottom groove, Carson powered through traffic to take the $1,000 checkered flag ahead of Jimmy Sills in the 18-car field. Later in the Masters vs. Young Guns event, Carson turned in a fourth-place run, the highest finishing driver from the Masters class.

"Last night was nice," said Carson, of Yukon, Okla. "It's always cool to come back to Knoxville and to get a chance to race again. Larry Weeks and my former owner, Bob Trostle, have lots of experience here and I was lucky to have the opportunity to drive for them. The deal we cut together was sealed Wednesday when he got his motor back and they put it in the J&J chassis to race this weekend. My DIRT schedule allowed me a few days to make the trip from Oklahoma and get back to my "home track". Some things never change, there is nothing like winning, and for the first time since 1985 was very special."

The night of racing on Friday was a prelude to the 2006 National Sprint Car Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday, with original Outlaws Sammy Swindell, Jimmy Sills and Rickey Hood among those to be enshrined.
