Lasoski Wins Lowe's Preliminary Feature
By Richard Day
CONCORD, NC (May 25) -- Danny Lasoski was a man on a mission Saturday. He knew Mark Kinser was unable to restart the Preliminary Feature in the Chip Thunder Outlaws Showdown Presented by Lance Snacks at The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway, so he was poised to take the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points lead.
Lasoski held off defending and 16-time series champion Steve Kinser throughout the final 24 laps to claim the $5,000 first prize.
"It was a crap shoot because we didn't know what the track would be like," Lasoski said. "We actually had our car too loose and Steve almost collected us at the end. We're just glad to be locked in (into the feature program's CHANNELLOCK Dash), and we hope to put things together for this next race."
Rain forced the series to postpone a Friday Preliminary Feature televised live on TNN: The National Network for the second time in a week. This time, the teams completed six tough laps in the Chip Thunder Outlaws Showdown Presented by Lance Snacks at Lowe's Motor Speedway's semi-banked, 4/10-mile oval before the rain hit. The series completed the Preliminary Feature Saturday following the feature program's qualifying session.
Mark Kinser collided with Butch Schroeder on front straightaway and flipped within seconds after the green flag fell in the Preliminary Feature Friday. Danny Wood hit Kinser and flipped, while Billy Wilburn spun in turn one and Randy Hannagan collided with Third O'Reilly Heat Race winner Kyle Sauder.
Dale Blaney burst into the lead from outside the front row as the green flag replaced the red. Lasoski, who started outside the third row, veered into the high groove between the first and second corners to pass fast-qualifier and First O'Reilly Heat Race winner Donny Schatz for third place early in the opening lap.
Blaney's #10 U.S. Print/MBNA/Mopar Maxim turned sideways and flipped late in the first lap, giving the lead to pole-sitter Daryn Pittman. Wood and Sauder returned to the race during the red period.
Pittman slid out of the low groove in turn four as the race resumed, allowing Lasoski to take the lead. Schroeder collided with Phil Gressman in the second corner early in the second lap, and flipped Junior Holbrook's #8H Maxim. Kinser drove the #5M Mopar Maxim back into the race following the red period. Mechanical problems in the #15 Parker Stores Maxim allowed seven cars to pass Schatz on the ensuing restart.
Defending World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion Craig Dollansky took the high line through the third and fourth corners to pass Pittman late in lap three. Stevie Smith, who used a provisional to start the Preliminary Feature, hit the wall and stopped in the first corner several seconds later.
Dollansky lost third place when the #7 Polydome Maxim suffered a blown engine, causing him to stop on the front straightaway early in the sixth lap. Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidates Brad Furr and Jason Meyers collided in turn one on the restart, causing Meyers to flip before the rain hit The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
"The Dude" drove NASCAR Winston Cup star Tony Stewart's #20L J.D. Byrider Eagle ahead of the field as the green flag fell Saturday evening. He was a full-straightaway ahead of Steve Kinser when he entered lapped traffic during the 17th lap.
Kinser narrowed the gap to five car-lengths in dense traffic by lap 20, however. "The King of the Outlaws" raced wheel-to-wheel with Lasoski through turns three and four the next time around, but was unable to surge ahead. Kinser drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim deep in the third corner to pass Lasoski late in the 26th lap, only to have "The Dude" regain the lead with a high move in turn four.
Sammy Swindell, who started outside the eighth row, tried to pass Kinser for second place with an inside move in fourth corner as they headed for the checkered flag, but was unable to complete the pass.
Lasoski took the checkered flag with six car-lengths to spare for his second Preliminary Feature victory of the season.
Eighteenth-starting Andy Hillenburg held off Pittman for fourth place. Schatz finished sixth, ahead of Tim Shaffer, Jeff Shepard, 19th-starting Paul McMahan and Furr.
