World of Outlaws Set for Cactus Classic Saturday at Manzanita Speedway
Phoenix, AZ--March 1, 2007 -- The World of Outlaws will wrap up their two race swing through the Arizona desert this weekend on Saturday March 3 with the Cactus Classis at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix.
Five drivers that have won a race at the storied track will be competing on Saturday night. On top of this list is Steve Kinsser, the 20-time World of Outlaws Champion, who has won nine A-Feature events at Manzanita. His first win at the track came in 1979. From 1986-1996, he won six straight races at facility located on the corner of 35th & Broadway. The native of Bloomington, Indiana has also picked up wins in his last two visits to the track in 2004 and 2005.
Donny Schatz, the reigning World of Outlaws Champion also has been victorious at Manzanita. He won at the half-mile in October of 1999. The native of Fargo, North Dakota is the current series point leader, and opened the season with a victory in the Florida DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park, another half-mile. Entering the two race weekend in the Arizona desert, Schatz has four Top-10 finishes in the first five races, with three of those being finishes of third or better. He currently holds a 25 point advantage over Terry McCarl of Altoona, Iowa.
Danny Lasoski, the 2001 World of Outlaws Champion won at Manzanita last season, in a thrilling duel with Schatz. This was one of Lasoski's two A-Feature triumphs in 2006. He started the season off with three straight runs of sixth or better during the Florida DIRTcar Nationals, and this has the four-time Knoxville Nationals winner seventh overall in championship points.
Jac Haudenschild holds the track record at Manzanita. He turned a blistering lap of 15.34 seconds on January 30, 1997 to garner that honor. He won at the legendary track in 1998, adding his name to the illustrious list of winner's there. The native of Wooster, Ohio is coming off two very strong runs last weekend, that him finish second on Friday night at Thunderbowl Raceway in California, and he backed that up by charging from the 19th starting spot on Saturday night to come home sixth. He is currently eighth in points with three Top-10 finishes.
Daryn Pittman won his first race at Manzanita last season on October 20. He turned in a dominating performance as he started on the pole and led all 30 laps. In the spring race last season, he also turned in a steady run finishing in the ninth spot. The native of Owasso, Oklahoma has been victorious this season already on a half-mile, as he picked up the checkered flag in the finale of the Florida DIRTcar Nationals on February 11. He has three Top-10 finishes so far this season, and is tied for the fourth spot in championship points.
Also in action on Friday night will be Terry McCarl who is second in World of Outlaws points. The native of Altoona, Iowa finished second last Saturday night at Thunderbowl Raceway and enters this weekend with three straight Top-five finishes and four Top-10's overall in the first five races of the year.
Joey Saldana, driving for NASCAR star Kasey Kahne, will be looking for his first win at the legendary half-mile. Saldana, a native of Brownsburg, Indiana, picked up his first win of the World of Outlaws season last Friday night at Thunderbowl Raceway, and is currently third in points on the strength of four Top-10 finishes in the first five races of the year.
Craig Dollansky, who enters the event tied for the fourth spot in the current standings, has recorded three Top-10 finishes in the first five races, with two of those being in the Top-Five. The native of Elk River, Minnesota finished third in the fall race last season at Manzanita and was sixth in the fall.
Brooke Tatnell turned in two strong runs at Manzanita last season. He started on the pole in the spring race and finished a very solid third, after setting fast time. In the fall event, he battled back from a flat tire that sent him to the work area and the rear of the field to come home eighth, after running in the Top-three in the early portions of the event. He enters this weekend sixth overall in points, on the strength of four Top-10 runs to start his first season behind the wheel of Larry Woodward's machine.
The two drivers that round out the Top-10 in World of Outlaws points have already visited victory lane this season. Rookie Kerry Madsen of Australia, won on February 10 during the Florida DIRTcar Nationals, and Tim Kaeding picked up a very emotional win last weekend at Thunderbowl Raceway in front of his home state crowd, dedicating the win to his grandmother who had passed away earlier in the week.
The Cactus Classic which is brought to the fans by Arizona Race Mart, will be the World of Outlaws first of two visits on the season to the blazing fast half-mile.
