World of Outlaws News & Notes
Concord, NC--May 14, 2007
One of the busiest stretches of the season begins this week for the World of Outlaws, as they embark on their first East Coast swing of the season. The series will race five times in a six-day period at four different tracks in three states. This comes on the heals of a nearly 800-mile journey east from Missouri to Pennsylvania, where the series will compete at Lernerville Speedway on Tuesday, May 15 in the First Commonwealth Bank Clash, followed by two full nights of racing at Williams Grove Speedway on Thursday, May 17 and Friday, May 18. The series then head northeast to the largest track on the schedule, the sprawling 5/8-mile Orange County Fair Speedway in New York on Saturday, May 19, followed by a return to New Egypt Speedway in New Jersey on Sunday, May 20.
A Helping Hand: Tony Bruce Jr. and his team stepped in to help the SC Motorsports team and driver Brian Carlson on Saturday night at Lake Ozark Speedway. After sustaining an injury in time trials that required medical care, Carlson was admitted to a local hospital, and thus not able to drive the team's truck and trailer from the track. Bruce and his team drove the trailer back to Linden, Indiana for Carlson and his wife/crew chief Sarah.
First Timer: Zach Chappell, one of the current contenders for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award set fast time for the first time in his World of Outlaws career on Saturday at Lake Ozark Speedway. He toured the semi-banked 1/3-mile in 11.705 seconds at 102.418 mph. The native of Talala, Oklahoma preceded that with a fourth-place effort in time trials the night before at U.S. 36 Raceway.
"That is one of those dreams that you dream of that never really think will come true (setting fast time), but it finally did for us," said Chappell. "We wanted to come out here this season and be competitive and we finally have things going in the right direction. We hope to keep this going."
An Added Bonus: Donny Schatz set fast time for the second time this season on Friday night at U.S. 36 Raceway with a lap around the high-banked 3/8-mile oval in 10.358 seconds at 130.334 mph. For his efforts, Schatz not only received five bonus points in the World of Outlaws championship standings, but also a $1,000 bonus from Cox Metal Design & Metal Fabrication in Altoona, Iowa
Going Back to School: Sam Hafertepe Jr., one of the contenders for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award began last Friday by speaking with students at Winston Elementary and Winston High School in Winston, Missouri. The native of Sunnyvale, Texas spoke about fairness, choices, respect, and character. His No. 15H car was on display for students to see, and he also signed autographs and posed for pictures.
"It was great talking to all the students," said Hafertepe. "When I was younger, I didn't believe my teachers, and now I realize that they were right all along. You have to know that to make it in the real world and that is what we spoke to the students about. They were great kids. I tried to give them some insight about how we have made it this far, and how I am living my dream."
An Extra Wrench: Veteran World of Outlaws car owner and crew chief Mike Woodring helped Randy Hannagan and his team turn the wrenches this past weekend. On Friday night at U.S. 36 Raceway, Hannagan earned a spot in the Crane Cams Dash, and earned a season-best finish of seventh in the A-Feature. A strong 11th-place run also followed for the team at Lake Ozark Speedway on Saturday.
A Packed House: For the second straight year the event at U.S. 36 Raceway coordinated by SLS Promotions drew a standing room only crowd. Fans continued to stream in well after the green flag flew in the first heat. Fans that arrived early had a chance to get autographs from home state favorite Danny Lasoski, who joined Randy Hannagan and Tony Bruce Jr. to meet and greet the fans.
Warm Welcome: Donny Schatz and his team welcomed over 100 guests on Saturday at Lake Ozark Speedway for a Snap-on Tools hospitality event. Schatz drove his specially painted Snap-on car to a fifth-place finish in the event. It was the second of eight events that he will run in the car which is red and black. He won in his debut in the car at Knoxville Raceway on April 28, and the next schedule event for the car will be on June 9 at Eagle Raceway in Nebraska.
Luck of the Draw: On Friday night at U.S. 36 Raceway, eight World of Outlaws drivers received a little help when drawing to determine the Top-Eight starting spots in the Crane Cams Dash. Each driver was paired with a child from the crowd, who drew a pill for that driver, along with a number of other children that gathered by the flag stand to take part in the activity.
