Smith Wins as Outlaws Christen Route 66 Raceway By Richard Day JOLIET, IL (July 26) - Stevie Smith continued to improve on the best year of his career while several other drivers recorded season-high finishes Sunday when a sellout crowd packed Route 66 Raceway for its inaugural Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series event. Smith passed Danny Lasoski late in the 13th lap and held off Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Steve Kinser for his 11th "A" Feature victory of the season. Stevie won 10 main events and finished third in the standings in 1993. Sunday's $7,000 victory pushed him into second place in the points race. "I owe it all to my crew," Smith said graciously. "Nobody works harder than my dad (Steve Smith) and Devin (Deluzio). They've given me a great race car. I also have to thank Ingersoll-Rand for being such a great sponsor." Dale Blaney's third-place run from outside the fifth row was his second top-five finish of the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 20th Anniversary Season. Gary Wright, Craig Dollansky and Garry Brazier enjoyed their best runs of the year, finishing fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Smith, the fifth-fastest qualifier in the 41-car field, earned the right to start the 30-lap main event on the pole by winning his fourth Channellock Dash of the season. Stevie drove his #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit into the lead as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature, only to have Lasoski pass him with a high move in turn two seconds later. "The Dude" had the #83 Beef Packers Eagle eight car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when he entered lapped traffic six laps into the race. Kinser, who passed Sammy Swindell for third place early in the second lap, steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim into the low groove in turn three to pass Stevie for second late in lap six. Swindell and rookie Tyler Walker relegated Smith to fifth place during the next two laps before Mark Kinser, Lance Blevins and Fourth Racing Champions Heat Race winner Jac Haudenschild collided between the first and second corners late in the ninth lap. Severe damage to the #5M Wirtgen Maxim and the #21 Up Front J&J kept Mark and Blevins from restarting the race. Steve Kinser surrendered second place when his crew replaced his flat left rear tire during the caution period. Smith restarted in fourth place and raced past Swindell and Walker during the next two laps. He passed "The Dude" for the lead with a low move between turns three and four late in the 13th lap. Lasoski, who led all but four laps at Knoxville Raceway the previous Wednesday, pressured Stevie during the race's middle stages, but was unable to regain first place. Smith was six car-lengths ahead of "The Dude" when they caught the backmarkers again during the 17th lap. Swindell exchanged fourth place with Dollansky before stopping his #1 Channellock Stealth between turns three and four with a flat left rear tire late in lap 21. Lasoski lost second place when he pitted with a flat right rear tire during the caution. Dollansky took the high line into the second corner to pass Walker for the runner-up spot early in lap 23. Steve Kinser, who raced back into fourth place, took third when Walker's #35 Air Sep Eagle suffered a flag right rear tire the next time around. "The King of the Outlaws" used a low move in turn one to pass Dollansky for second as the green flag replaced the yellow. Blaney drove the #93 Amoco J&J past Dollansky and Wright during the next two laps to claim third place. With all the battles for position raging behind him, Smith opened a comfortable advantage during the final four laps. Kinser was racing through turn three as Stevie took the checkered flag. Blaney held off Wright for third. Dollansky finished fifth, ahead of Brazier, Sammy Swindell, Frankie Kerr, Walker and 22nd- starting Jeff Swindell. Steve Kinser received his third Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the year after pacing the qualifying session with a 15.017- second, 119.864-m.p.h., lap around the 1/2-mile oval. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' next stop is Lernerville Speedway, where it will sanction the Seventh Annual Don Martin Silver Cup race Tuesday. The series is scheduled to run a $75,000 event at Williams Grove Speedway Thursday and Friday, then head to Hagerstown Speedway Saturday.
