Lasoski Wins State Fair Event; His Second Straight By Richard Day SEDALIA, MO (July 23) - As rarely as Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series drivers get home during the season, Danny Lasoski received quite a treat last week. The defending Amoco Knoxville Nationals champion responded in style, sandwiching "A" Feature victories at his two home tracks - Knoxville Raceway Wednesday and State Fair Motors Speedway Friday - around his Second Annual Michael Ross Foundation Golf Tournament. "I thought the Nationals was great, but for a Missouri boy, winning here, close to my home town, is just awesome," Danny said. "I want to thank American Compressed Steel and Tony Ross for everything, and for putting on the golf tournament yesterday. "We're going to try to make a run for the title, but Mark and Steve and those guys are all really tough. If we keep winning races though, we just may have a shot at it yet." Lasoski's ninth victory of the season pushed him to within 90 points of Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Mark Kinser. It's the closest "The Dude" has been to Kinser in seven weeks. Lasoski, the eighth-fastest qualifier in the 23-car field, won the First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race and earned the right to start the 25- lap "A" Feature on the front row by following Stevie Smith across the finish line in the Channellock Dash. Smith and Lasoski raced wheel-to-wheel down the front stretch and through the first corner before Stevie drove his #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit into the lead in turn two. Smith steadily increased his advantage, and was a half- straightaway ahead of "The Dude" when he entered lapped traffic five laps into the race. Jimmy Carr, Lasoski's crew chief last season, opened the field ahead of the leaders four laps later when he stopped in turn two and brought out the caution flag. Steve Kinser, who won the May 14th race at State Fair Motor Speedway, passed Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Kevin Gobrecht as the green flag replaced the yellow, then drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim past Donny Schatz for fourth place with an inside move into the second corner early in lap 12. The 13th lap proved unlucky for Smith, who surrendered the lead when he suffered a flat right rear tire and stopped in turn one. Lasoski restarted in first place, and controlled the restart. Mark Kinser, a two-time winner at State Fair Motor Speedway, steered the #5M Mopar Maxim into the low groove in the first corner to pass Gobrecht as the race resumed, then used an inside move in turn four to pass Schatz for fourth place one lap later. Kevin Whitworth's third-corner spin brought out the caution flag late in the 16th lap. Schatz surrendered fifth place when his crew replaced the right rear tire on the #15 Parker Stores Maxim during the caution period. Schatz raced back through the field and was battling Jac Haudenschild for 12th when they collided with two laps remaining. Schatz restarted and eventually finished in 15th place. Lasoski drove the #83 Beef Packers Eagle away from the field as the race resumed, and was 12 car-lengths ahead of Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Tyler Walker when he took the checkered flag. "Stevie was tough, but I knew he had a soft tire on," Lasoski said. "We thought the track would take some rubber, so we ran a Goodyear 50, and it paid off. I'm not sure if we would have caught Stevie or not, but I think it would have been a good race." The Kinser cousins - Steve and Mark - finished third and fourth, respectively. Sammy Swindell, who has won two main events at State Fair Motor Speedway, finished fifth, ahead of Daryn Pittman, Gobrecht, 17th-starting Johnny Herrera, Jeff Swindell and Smith. Walker received his sixth Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season for pacing the qualifying session with a 17.057-second lap around the semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval. Lasoski set State Fair Motor Speedway's single-lap record with a 16.120-second lap May 14th. WoO
