Pittman takes TMS Shootout opener
FT. WORTH, TX (Oct. 10) - After weeks of consistent top five runs, Daryn Pittman and the Sherdon Motorsports team raced into victory lane on Friday night in the World of Outlaws Cheaper Than Dirt Shootout at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track. Pittman scored his fourth World of Outlaw feature event victory of the season by passing Steve Kinser at the start/finish line on lap 23. The 24 year-old Owasso, OK, native kept the "The King of Outlaws" behind him the rest of the way to score his first career win at TMS.
"We were good all night and this really feels good to be back in victory lane," said Pittman, who currently ranks fourth in the WoO standings. "We put a harder tire on the most of the other guys and it took us a while to get heat in the tires. I couldn't really get going, but then I went up to the top groove and just started driving by guys. Steve and I had a great battle and I'll yell you from I was sitting you'd never guess he's points racing right now. He wanted that win."
It was clear early in the program that Pittman was going to be a player. He set quick time in the #21 Hop & Sack/Gaerte/Mopar CMC Chassis sprinter and raced to second in the first heat race. A fourth place finish in the Dash earned him a fourth row staring position for the feature event.
Pittman started seventh and dropped back early on during the 30-lap race. After moving to the high side, he began coming forward in the field. On the 22nd lap, he passed his way from fourth into second before taking his shot at Kinser. He made his run for the lead coming out of four and never looked back.
"The people here at the track did a tremendous job with the racing surface," continued Pittman. "They worked on it all night, and I think the fans got to see a good race. Everyone was a little leery about running up top, but I just got up there and it was the best place for me to run. This is a new car built by CMC and to have Bob Foster here was really cool. I'm glad to get a win for him."
"The other huge positive is that Joe (Gaerte) and the guys at Gaerte Engines have got us some new motors and these Mopars really run strong. I can't tell you how excited I am about the potential for next year. When you have a strong combination like what we had tonight, you want to race everyday."
Pittman is locked into Saturday's 40-lap "A" feature and will start the Dash event, which sets the starting eight spots, from the pole.
"Half-the battle in these two night shows is putting yourself in a position to win on Saturday," continued Pittman. "We don't have to qualify, or mess with a heat race. The crew (Joe Gaerte, Bingo Jenkins and Glenno Inglis) has done a great job all year and tomorrow night, we'll just watch the track and try to get the car as good as it was tonight and try to get another win."
Saturday's program can be heard live on SCN: The Sprint Car Network via the world wide web at: www.sprintcarnet.com.
