Lasoski Tightens Outlaw Points Battle with Williams Grove Win

Danny Lasoski claimed his first Williams Grove Speedway World of Outlaws A-feature Saturday night in the 30 lap finale of the Cleveland Brothers Summer Nationals. The victory, combined with a twenty-fifth place finish by Steve Kinser (who was leading when he lost an engine), pushed "The Dude" to within forty points of Kinser at the top of the point standings.

Lasoski, who won a preliminary feature at Williams Grove before a practice crash the next night put him out of action for several races in 2002, took his fifth A-feature win of 2004.

"I remember winning a prelim here, and I remember waking up somewhere over (in turn 3) the next night, but I don't remember the crash, and I don't want to. But to get a feature win here and at Eldora this year, it's just unbelievable," Lasoski said after the event.

Lance Dewease and Mark Smith in an all-Pennsylvania front row led the field to the green flag, with Dewease taking the lead and Steve Kinser moving from the inside of row two to second in the first corner. Sammy Swindell and Craig Dollansky moved into the top five in the first three laps, with Lasoski, who started eleventh, passing Lucas Wolfe for sixth on lap four.

Dewease's ten car length lead evaporated when he encountered slower traffic on lap eight, and Kinser was able to gain control one circuit later, passing Friday's Williams Grove A-feature winner on the high side exiting turn four.

Danny Wood brought out the first caution flag of the race on lap eleven, spinning directly in front of Dewease in turn one. Dewease was able to avoid contact, while Wood restarted at the back of the field. Lasoski moved into the top five on lap seventeen, using the low side of the speedway to get by Sammy Swindell in turn four. Lasoski passed Craig Dollansky for fourth on lap nineteen, and then took third from Mark Smith two laps later. "The Dude" got second from Lance Dewease on lap twenty-three, just moments before leader Steve Kinser's engine lost power on the backstretch to bring out the caution flag. Kinser would be credited with twenty-fifth in the race.

The remaining seven laps were no problem for the 2001 World of Outlaws champion, as he cruised to a full straightaway win over Dewease. Dollansky held onto third, with Jason Meyers moving by Swindell for fourth in the final stages of the race.

"We had a terrible night last night," Lasoski said from victory lane. "I just have to thank Jimmy Carr, Todd Splain, and this entire JD Byrider crew for working hard tonight. I also have to thank Jason Meyers--he drove to Pittsburgh today to meet Paul Kistler and pick up an engine for us along with one of his. It didn't get to the track until about 4pm this afternoon. We came to the track tonight without a motor in the car. I knew most of the guys were probably going to run up top on the lip (of the track), and as you know you can't pass anyone running where they are. I watched Donny Kreitz in the B-main, and he ran good on the bottom, so I just told Jimmy Carr 'let's just set it up to run the bottom.' I had no idea how big a lead I had at the end. You just saw everything I've got."

Seventeen-year-old Lucas Wolfe, who became the youngest feature winner at Williams Grove just one week ago, notched his first career World of Outlaws top ten finish with a ninth at the checkered.

Williams Grove track record holder Brian Paulus was running third in the second dash when he spun into the wall in turn four. Paulus' crew worked to make repairs, appearing late in the staging lane for the A-feature. Paulus took one lap, then retired to the pits.

King's Royal winner Jason Sides used a World of Outlaws provisional to start twenty-fifth in the A-feature, with 2004 National Sprint Car Hall of Fame inductee Keith Kauffman taking a Williams Grove provisional to line up twenty-sixth.

The World of Outlaws will make their final appearance of the 2004 season at the historic half-mile on Friday and Saturday, October 1 and 2, for the running of the Cleveland Brothers National Open. The richest sprint car event in the eastern United States will pay the winner $25,000.
