Dewease Completes Sweep of National Open By Richard Day MECHANICSBURG, PA (October 5) - Lance Dewease gave himself an unforgettable early birthday present Saturday when he completed his sweep of the feature races in the 34th Annual Williams Grove National Open. Dewease, who was born on October 6th - three years after the first National Open event - became the first non-World of Outlaws regular to sweep a Skoal Outlaw Series in recent memory when he led all 40 laps to claim the $25,000 first prize. "This is a heck of a birthday present for me," Dewease told the standing-room-only crowd from victory lane. "I want to thank two people - my mom and my dad - for getting me started and helping me out. They did what they could with their money and they sacrificed a lot, just to get me into this (sprint car racing). If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be here." Dewease took the lead within seconds after the green flag fell in the championship feature, steering the #461 Dyer Masonry Schnee into the high groove to pass polesitter Mark Kinser in the second corner. He opened a five-car-length lead within four laps as Kinser and Billy Pauch exchanged the runner-up spot. Dewease entered lapped traffic with a 10-car-length advantage during the eighth lap. Kinser narrowed the gap to three car- lengths as the Williams Grove points leader slowed behind a pack of backmarkers the next time around. Dewease raced through lapped traffic with ease, however, and increased his advantage to 15 car-lengths within four laps. Defending World of Outlaws champion Dave Blaney started making his way toward the front as Dewease extended his lead. He passed Kinser for the runner-up spot midway through the race as Lance opened a half-straightaway advantage. Steve Kinser, who set quick-time and won the First Heat Race, joined the battle for third place during lap 21. "The Buckeye Bullet" cut Dewease's lead in half in dense lapped traffic early in the 25th lap, only to have a quick move around a pack of backmarkers enable the leader to increase his advantage again. Dewease appeared to have an insurmountable half-stretch lead with seven laps remaining, only to have Blaney close to within five car-lengths within two laps. At the same time, "The King of the Outlaws" and Pauch relegated Mark Kinser to fifth place. Only four laps remained in the race when Andy Hillenburg stopped his #2 STP J&J in turn four with a flat right rear tire, bringing out the yellow flag for the first time. But, just as quickly as Blaney took advantage of the caution and passed Lance for the lead during the restart, the red flag nullified the move. A lengthy red period ensued after a four-car collision in turn four involving Len Thompson, Donnie Kreitz, Jr., Jeff Swindell and Mike Wagner sent Thompson flipping. Dewease kept the #461 ahead of Blaney as the green flag replaced the red. He was increasing his advantage and "The King of the Outlaws" was challenging Blaney for the runner-up spot when the #1 Channellock Gambler suffered a broken drive shaft, forcing Sammy Swindell to stop on the back straightaway. The caution flag was thrown again, setting the stage for a two-lap dash to the checkered flag. Blaney was trying to keep pace with Dewease when the #10 Vivarin J&J started smoking on the front straightaway within seconds after the race resumed. Kinser passed "The Buckeye Bullet" in the first corner and Pauch relegated him to fourth place during the final lap as Blaney's engine lost power. Dewease almost suffered a similar fate late in the final lap, as the #461 lost a valve and slowed on the front straightaway. Although the engine problem allowed "The King of the Outlaws" to narrow the gap, Dewease took the checkered flag with four car- lengths to spare. "These guys are the best in the world," Dewease said of the Skoal Outlaw Series racers. "We weren't really competitive early in the year, so I'm glad to give the Central Pennsylvania fans something to remember this year by." Blaney managed to hold off Mark Kinser for fourth place. Completing the top 10 were Third Heat Race winner Joe Gaerte, Jac Haudenschild, Joey Saldana, "B" Feature winner Johnny Herrera and Fourth Heat Race winner Keith Kauffman. Saldana started next to Herrera on the ninth row and drove the #75 Mopar Maxim past 10 cars in the championship feature. Racing into eighth place while Lance Blevins used a provisional start and finished 20th, pushed Joey into the lead in the 1996 Skoal Outlaw Series Rookie of the Year point standings.
