Hillier Runs 24th After Spinning at Attica
ATTICA, OH (April 20) -- Chad Hillier was running 16th with 23 laps remaining in Friday's World of Outlaws' Kistler Engines Night "A" Feature at Attica Raceway Park when the #5C DIRT Incorporated Maxim spun. After restarting at the rear of the field, the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate raced into 24th place.
Hillier, the fastest qualifier in the Paducah International Raceway event on April 6th, was seventh-quick Friday. His 12.116-second, 99.942-MPH lap around Attica's semi-banked, 1/3-mile oval was only .194 seconds off Jason Solwold's pace-setting lap.
Hillier's fourth-place finish in the Third Heat Race gave him the luxury of starting outside the sixth row in the 40-lap main event.
"We were lucky enough to get a decent number (in qualifying)," Hillier said. "We put together a couple of good laps and qualified in the top 10. We were running second in the heat, but I gave it away to (Craig) Dollansky and lost it (third place) to (Justin) Henderson. We started the feature pretty good, but I just drove off the end of the track in turn three. I got the right rear above the cushion a little bit on entry, and spun.
"We weren't too bad. We could have run a little bit better, but as slick as the place was and never racing there before, we were pretty happy to be in the feature. There were 50-plus cars there, and a lot of the guys had raced there plenty of times, so we were fortunate to get into the show. We just couldn't capitalize on it, unfortunately. There were some good racers there who were in the "C" and the "B" and couldn't make it, so we gained some points on them. A couple of other guys had to use provisionals, which freed up the provisional list a little bit if it comes down to us having to use one. We haven't used any yet. We were unable to take one at Eldora last week because a couple of guys ahead of us in points used theirs. We still have two we can use, and I think we get two more in July. They can be really valuable. Later in the year, when we go back to Ohio again, and to Pennsylvania where they have 30 good local cars, that will give us something to fall back on. You have to look at the positives to keep yourself from getting too down."
Hillier, Crew Chief Tyler Swank and the rest of the DeWitt Industries Racing Team will be back in action Saturday night at Tri-State Speedway, a high-banked, ¼-mile oval in Haubstadt, IN celebrating its 50th year of operation.
Hillier is in the midst of a tough battle for the World of Outlaws' 2007 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year award. The only driver to win all three sprint car championships at Skagit Speedway trails Kerry Madsen, Sam Hafertepe, Jr., and Tony Bruce, Jr., and leads Zach Chappell and James Mosher.
