Mechanical Problems Plague Kaeding at Grandview
BECHTELSVILLE, PA (May 23) -- Tim Kaeding's final race as Brooke Tatnell's substitute for Woodward Racing certainly didn't materialize the way he would have liked.
Mechanical problems in the #2 Volcano Joe's Coffee Schnee kept the 2002 Golden State Challenge King of California Series champion from taking a qualifying lap or starting the "B" Feature in Wednesday's World of Outlaws Keystone Cup Challenge at Grandview Speedway.
"We broke a rear end and a drive line in hot laps, and we couldn't get it fixed in time for qualifying," dejected Crew Chief Troy Renfro said. "We just ran the heat race to make sure the motor was alright. We didn't start the "B" because it's so tough to pass at that place and there was no way we were going to make it into the top four from the rear. It was just a matter of economics."
Kaeding finished 11th or better in five of the eight races he ran for Woodward Racing, including a runner-up run at U.S. 36 Raceway on May 11th. The third-generation driver plans to return to his home in San Jose to put together a team with veteran sprint car mechanic Rod Tiner.
Tatnell, who left the team to visit his late father following the April 28th World of Outlaws event at Knoxville Raceway, will return to the cockpit of the "Black Deuce" Friday at The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The Eckerd Outlaw Showdown will be taped for a June 10th telecast on SPEED.
"Timmy did a good job for us," Tatnell said Wednesday. "He put up some good results. I appreciate him standing in for us."
