Kaeding Runs Second in Missouri High-Banked Nationals
OSBORN, MO (May 11) -- Tim Kaeding put on a show for the throng of fans who crowded into U.S. 36 Raceway for the Second Annual Missouri High-Banked Nationals Friday, driving the #2 Volcano Joe's Coffee Schnee into second place.
Kaeding recorded his second top-10 finish in as many races for Woodward Racing, finishing only 1.133 seconds behind flag-to-flag winner Jason Meyers. Brooke Tatnell, the team's regular driver, is visiting his father who is battling cancer in Australia.
"I'm doing the best I can for Brooke," Kaeding said. "I wish we would have won for him, but second place is better than last place. I'm just happy to be at the front again."
Kaeding's 130.008-MPH lap around the high-banked, 3/8-mile oval was only .026 seconds off Donny Schatz's pace-setting lap. Kaeding started the Third Heat Race next to former boss Steve Kinser outside the second row and finished in fourth place. Tim's eighth-place finish in the Crane Cams Dash gave him the luxury of starting outside the fourth row in the 40-lap main event.
Kaeding passed Randy Hannagan for fifth place several seconds before Danny Lasoski and Justin Henderson collided and brought out the caution flag late in the ninth lap. The third-generation driver raced past Jason Solwold during the 15th lap, then pulled off a miraculous move to pass Paul McMahan and Terry McCarl as they entered lapped traffic seven laps later.
Kaeding lined up behind Meyers after Jeremy Campbell spun during lap 24. Although Meyers opened a 1.23-second advantage soon after a 26th-lap caution, Kaeding challenged Meyers for the lead for most of the second half of the race, almost passing him several times during the final two laps.
"When they held up the lineup board, I saw that Tim was behind me," Meyers said. "I've raced with Tim long enough to know that you're never safe with him behind you with two laps to go. I though he might have something for us, and I knew I had to go hard those last few laps."
Kaeding did everything he could to pass Meyers, but cautions slowed his progress.
"I think it would have gone the entire way green, it would have been a close race," Tim said. "Jason was really good, and I was hoping for open track. Once we got in lapped traffic, everyone was pretty equal and everyone was running in the same place (on the racetrack)."
