Tire Seals Woodward Racing's Fate in Paducah
PADUCAH, KY (April 6) -- Despite driving Woodward Racing's #2 Volcano Joe's Coffee Schnee into 12th place during the first 26 laps, Brooke Tatnell finished 16th in Friday's World of Outlaws "A" Feature at Paducah International Raceway.
"We were going forward before that last yellow, but our (right rear) tire sealed up on us," Tatnell said. "Before that happened, we were running with (Donny) Schatz and we were a couple of cars behind Danny (Lasoski, who won the race from the 15th starting position). I'm not really sure why the tire sealed up so fast on those extended yellows. A lot of guys sealed them up at the end but, for whatever reason, ours sealed up before theirs."
Tatnell's 92.694-MPH) lap around Paducah's high-banked, 3/8-mile oval was the 17th-fastest in 39-car field, .827 seconds off Chad Hillier's pace-setting, 13.737-second lap.
"We were a touch off in qualifying, which seems to be where we are lately," Tatnell said. "We've been very good qualifiers in the last five years; we were never very far away from quick-time. The competition has stepped up this year, but it's not like it passed us by. We're just missing it, for whatever reason."
Tatnell passed Hillier during the third lap en route to a fourth-place finish in the First Heat Race, which qualified him for the ninth row inside starting position in the 35-lap main event.
The three-time defending Australian Sprintcar champion drove the #2 Volcano Joe's Coffee Schnee past three cars during the first three laps of the "A" Feature, then passed two more before a collision involving Dion Hindi and Paul McMahan brought out the caution flag late in the fifth lap. Tatnell restarted the race in 12th place after Craig Dollansky's flat right rear tire slowed the race with nine laps remaining, but finished 16th.
Despite the disappointing performance, Woodward Racing remained in seventh place in the World of Outlaws point standings. Saturday's race scheduled for I-55 Raceway was postponed due to unseasonably frigid temperatures.
"I was really looking forward to the Pevely (I-55 Raceway) race," Tatnell said. "We've always been strong there. It's a bullring; you just have to get after it and manhandle it. That's the kind of racetrack we need to run to get our rhythm going. There's nothing we can do about them postponing the race though. The weather's out of our control. It's not good for the drivers, but they made the right decision."
