'Dude' Wins Battle With Tatnell at Riverside By Richard Day COTTAGE GROVE, OR (August 23) - Danny Lasoski and Brooke Tatnell came from totally different racing backgrounds. "The Dude" won seven Knoxville Raceway championships, while Tatnell raced in Australia before joining the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series. The odd couple battled throughout the Wild, Wild Northwest Tour finale at Riverside Speedway Monday, exchanging the lead three times before Lasoski pulled out the victory. "Brooke gave me a great race there," Lasoski said. "My guys gave me a great car, and on the small tracks like this, you have to be able to go where the lapped traffic isn't. "We're still focused on being consistent and winning the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series championship, but the 5m (Mark Kinser) and the 11 car (Steve Kinser) are pretty tough." Tatnell was disappointed, yet gracious, after what he thought was going to be his first Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series victory. "I feel bad for my crew and Kele & Associates," Brooke said. "I think I let them down. This was the first race I've led since I left Australia six months ago, and I thought I might win one here. Now you know why Danny's won the Amoco Knoxville Nationals and so many other races. I just hope we put on a good show, because I think sprint car racing is the most exciting form of motor racing in the world." The show Lasoski and Tatnell put on was exhilarating. Tatnell led the first 12 laps from the pole, only to have Lasoski pass him and lead the next 17. They exchanged the lead twice during the 30th and 31st laps before "The Dude" took control and won his 10th "A" Feature of the season. Tatnell earned the right to start the 40-lap race from the pole by winning the Channellock Dash. He drove his #7K Kele & Associates J&J into the lead as the green flag fell, and was a half-straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers when he entered lapped traffic during the fourth lap. Lasoski, who started inside the second row, passed First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Jason Meyers with a high move in turn two early in lap six. Mechanical problems in the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim caused "B" Feature winner Daryn Pittman to stop in the second corner one lap later, bringing out the caution flag and opening the track ahead of the leaders. Tatnell controlled the restart and opened an eight car-length advantage within five laps. He jumped the cushion in turn one the next time around, however, allowing Lasoski to pass him for the lead. Mike Morelock and Kevin Etchison collided in the second corner early in the 16th lap, tightening the field again. "The Dude" drove the #83 Beef Packers Eagle away from Tatnell as the green flag replaced the yellow, and was eight car-lengths ahead when he caught the backmarkers again midway through the race. Lasoski increased his advantage to 12 car-lengths in dense lapped traffic within two laps. Tatnell narrowed the gap to three car-lengths by lap 27, and surprised Lasoski with an inside move between turns three and four to regain first place three laps later. "The Dude" chased Tatnell down the front stretch and returned the favor high in turn two. Lasoski steadily pulled away from Tatnell during the final 10 laps and took the checkered flag with a straightaway to spare. The Kinser cousins - Mark and Steve - finished third and fourth, respectively. Completing the top 10 were Sammy Swindell, Vivarin Fast- Time Award winner Hannagan, Donny Schatz, Kevin Gobrecht, Lance Blevins and Johnny Herrera. Hannagan received his first Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season after pacing the 41-car qualifying session with a 10.305-second lap around the semi-banked, 1/4-mile oval. The 87.336-m.p.h. lap lowered Riverside Speedway's single-lap record by .1 seconds. Mechanical problems in the #2 Luxaire J&J caused Andy Hillenburg to qualify 39th-quick. He made his way into the main event by winning the "C" Feature and passing 12 cars to finish second in the "B." He raced into 11th place from inside the 12th row in the "A" Feature. Manufacturers Rookie of the Year points leader Tim Shaffer was at Riverside Speedway, but the #11H Vivarin Eagle never made it. His team's tow rig broke down on the way from Grays Harbor Raceway Park.
