Natalie Barratt retired from the Acropolis Rally today after her Renault Clio S1600 suffered engine failure on SS8 of the opening leg of the event.
The 2004 Acropolis Rally got underway last night, (Thursday 03 June) with a run through the crowd-pleasing Lilea super special stage, 45kms away from the rally base of Lamia. Leg 1 then continued in earnest this morning at 06.30 with drivers contesting seven special stages and 143.20kms to the south of Lamia before concluding with another run around the Lilea super special stage.
Driving a Renault Clio S1600 for the first time on a World Rally event, Natalie along with co-driver Carl Williamson made a solid start to Leg 1 this morning. Building confidence with every stage as her knowledge of the Clio grew Natalie began to up her pace whilst at the same time trying to preserve the car as much as possible on a rally that rewards endurance. As luck would have it nearing the end of the opening leg Natalie suffered a loss of engine power at the start of SS8, the penultimate stage of the day, which was to signal her retirement from the event.
Natalie said: Four kilometres into stage eight the engine lost power and we were unable to continue. Its a disappointing finish to a very long week. I really like this rally, and I was looking forward to leg twos stages tomorrow as theyre my favourite in the event. Its just bad luck, the Clios a great car and I really enjoy driving it and now we have to look forward to Turkey and spending more time learning the car and concentrating on the rest of the season.
Natalies next rally will be the third round of the FIA Junior World Rally Championship, the Rally of Turkey on the 25-27 June.
