Leg two of Rally Argentina had a tragic accident in which a woman died after she was hit by a Production class car in the sixth round of World Rally Championship. The event was marred yesterday by the non-running of the "real" special stages. Today was the first real test of the competitors racing in the mountains.

And then tragedy hit the event on the 14th stage, Cosquin to Tanti in what would have been the second pass that was to have run on Friday, as a woman was killed by the Subaru Impreza STI of local racer Gonzalo Alenaz. The Group N driver was behind the rest of the competitors due to problems with a ball-joint, according to police sources.

The woman, who was born in Mar del Plata near Buenos Aires, was with two other residents trying to cross the road, just as Alenaz, who was starting the special stage and quickly getting up to speed. The Argentine driver was unable to avoid the three local residents.

The two young boys with her sustained minor injuries. They, the woman, Alenaz and his co-driver were immediately transfered to a local hospital where she died of injuries from the accident.

"The car when out to the right side where there were people that shouldn't be there when Alenaz was going to start the SS14," stated Pablo Kracoviak, member of Alenaz's team.
