Like thr controversial Group B category in 1986, the all conquering Group A 4WD turbo rally cars are set to be banned from the WRC in a radical overhaul of the series.
As early as 1998, the four wheel drive turbo cars look like being replaced by the much-publicised two wheel drive, two litre, normally aspirated cars. The FIA Rallies Commission are expected to approve the changes, due to be ratified at the next meeting of the FIA World Council in June.
Ever since the Audi Quattro burst onto the scene at the start of '81, 4WD cars have dominated top level rallying globally. When the changes have been approved, the existing Formula 2 category will cease to exist as the WRC follows the lead of the respected British Rally Championship and go full Formula 2.
The introduction of the new category in 1998 should also see the re-emergence of Peueot, Renault, Fiat, Nissan, and Vauxall onto the WRC leaderboards.
Along with this change, FIA president Max Mosley has asked for other changes, namely cost cutting and championship restructuring.
