The Hyundai drivers were on-song in SS15 and SS16, with Sordo and Neuville winning the respective stages, both moving ahead of Volkswagen's Andreas Mikkelsen.

The Norwegian was the biggest loser, dropping to fourth, and is now 1.4s behind Neuville in the overall standings.

"I'm really on the limit everywhere. It's hard for me to do much more than that. I think the two spare wheels are hindering me a bit. I can't drive quicker," Mikkelsen said.

Up ahead, Ogier maintained the top spot, with 20.3s separating the Frenchman and Sordo in second with just the Power Stage remaining.

Behind the top four, Hayden Paddon was fifth, ahead of the leading Ford of Mads Ostberg.

Skoda's Esapekka Lappi kept his WRC2 lead from Jan Kopecky and Armin Kremer.

SS17 cancelled

The penultimate stage of the rally, SS17, was cancelled with only Ford's Eric Camilli completing it.

The WRC's official feed read: "Rally organisers have confirmed the stage was cancelled because spectators were in a restricted zone.

"Organisers have appealed to all spectators to use only the designated areas and to follow the instructions of event marshals."

The power stage is scheduled to start on time.
