RK M-Sport World Rally Team’s Robert Kubica may have brought his Finnish debut with the Ford Fiesta RS WRC to a close under Rally 2 regulations, but the experience gained will prove vital to his future ambitions.

Few events in the FIA World Rally Championship demand as much precision and experience, and Robert showed some encouraging pace through the high-speed stages.

Running as the first car on the road for much of the event, the Pole had to contend with some difficult conditions. Tasked with clearing the loose layer of gravel that plagues the opening pass, the Formula One race winner had to adapt to a highly slippery surface – far removed from his more accustomed asphalt surface.

Despite the disadvantage, Robert was able to show some clear progression in speed. Most importantly however, he has gained the sought-after experience that allows a driver to fully commit to these demanding stages.

As the championship returns to the sealed-surface roads of the ADAC Rallye Deutschland in two weeks’ time, the Pole is looking forward to gaining further knowledge whilst showcasing his Tarmac talent.

Robert Kubica (34th):  “The mistake on Friday was not ideal but we’ve had three days of good driving which I have been pleased with. It is not easy coming here for the first time in a world rally car and for two days we were first on the road so that was something new to learn.

“Actually I have learnt a lot this weekend which is very good. I leave Finland a little disappointed because of Friday’s mistake, but with so much more experience, which is crucial.

“Next we go to Germany and the first true Tarmac rally of the year. I have not had a lot of asphalt driving recently, but of course I am looking forward. I know that it will not be an easy rally – especially in the vineyards with all the hairpins and tight corners – but hopefully the car will feel as good on Tarmac as it does on gravel at the moment.”

Team Principal, Malcolm Wilson OBE:  “It’s good to see Robert [Kubica] with a smile on his face at the end of this event. He has gained so much experience over the past couple of days and that will be invaluable to him as he continues to progress in the sport.”
