The Volkswagen driver, who can wrap up a third consecutive World Championship this weekend, went close to rolling his Polo on his first run through the 4.98 kilometre shakedown stage.

Despite the close call, Ogier went on to top the session by 1.1s, setting his best time on the fourth and final run.

“It was a little stunt moment on two wheels,” said Ogier.

“It was a long hairpin right and I was actually too slow going into the bend because I braked too early. I was too far on the inside and the bank lifted the car onto two wheels.

“Luckily I had the reflexes to open the steering in the other direction and put the car back on four wheels and spin it through 360 degrees.

“It wouldn’t have had big consequences if we had rolled because it was a slow corner, but I’m always happier when I bring the car back in perfect shape.”

Andreas Mikkelsen and Jari-Matti Latvala made it a Volkswagen 1-2-3 with the second and third fastest times respectively, while Kris Meeke was the best of the Citroens in fourth, and Thierry Neuville the best of the Hyundais in fifth.

Ott Tänak led the way for Ford, finishing the shakedown equal sixth with Dani Sordo.
