Rally Ireland receives high praise from World Rally Championship establishment
Marcus Gronholm, the double World Champion has come out in support of Rally Ireland's bid for a place in the World Rally Championship (WRC). In this week's Motorsport News, the Finnish rally driver said that he believes Rally Ireland should replace Rally Cyprus in the 2007 calendar. Rally Ireland will run it's WRC 'qualifier' rally on March 10th-12th with Sligo acting as the Host City, and the rally Service Park, once again being located at Enniskillen Airport.
When asked about Rally Ireland Gronholm said, 'the roads are very narrow and bumpy, I've heard, but why shouldn't we go?'
David Richards, the chairman of ISC (commercial rights-holders of the WRC), is also in favour of Ireland joining the WRC, 'the Irish proposal is very strong and I think it should be applauded.'
If successful in its bid, according to research, the value to Ireland of the rally would be in excess of millions.
