The Xsara is leading the Rally of Turkey.

The Citroën of Carlos Sainz and Marc Marti took the lead on the Rally of Turkey halfway through today's second leg. Tonight the Spanish crew stand over one minute ahead of their closest rivals.

Colin McRae and Derek Ringer made a good recovery and now lie in fourth place. Both Citroën Xsaras are now in a position to score a great result on the Turkish terrain.

Tomorrow's final leg is 84 km long with only one new stage out of the five to be run. It will be anything but an easy day.

At the end of leg 1 Colin McRae commented "There will be some action tomorrow", remarks that were echoed by Carlos Sainz.

The Citroën team-mates were right when they predicted that they would have a difficult second leg. Every team has experienced positions changes or incidents.

As usual Team director Guy Fréquelin stood on the stages to watch the competitors "live". He was astonished when he came back from SS10 having seen Carlos set a fastest time. "Right in front of me, on a down-hill section, seven drivers out of the first twelfth made a mistake. Some were hitting stones on the right, and some even stronger than others. But Carlos and Colin got it right."

Technical chassis director Jean-Claude Vaucard was judging how rough the terrain was : "From what we are seeing on the cars when they are coming back to service, we would say we are halfway in between Greece and Kenya.." One of Citroën's target here in Turkey was to try to fine-tune the Xsara's settings on slow and rough surfaces. The work done in this area has proved efficient.

Having moved up three positions today Colin McRae remained confident. "My pace today might not have been fast enough. But this leg has proved that anything can happen. I still believe I could try for a podium."

The car is great to drive in the fast sections and in the rough ones", explained the rally leader Carlos Sainz. "I attacked very hard. I hope we can continue to demonstrate this perfect reliability and remain in this position tomorrow."

Telefónica Movistar, Michelin, Magneti-Marelli, OZ, AIS and Citroën Financement are the partners of Team Citroën-Total in the World Rally Championship.
