Motorsport.com -- The Rally of Great Britain has ended and with it came celebration in all the land -- Richard Burns is the first Englishman to win the World Championship.
Burns was third in points entering the final event. At that time, Colin McRae held the lead one point over Tommi Mäkinen; however the two leaders hit trouble on the first leg and were out of the competition. Closest challenger to Burns was Carlos Sainz who withdrew from the competition during the second leg.
To secure the world crown, Burns needed to finish fourth overall in the Subaru Impreza. During the third and final leg, Burns and co-driver Robert Reid treaded carefully. "It's amazing, what else do you need to know? I'm ecstatic," said Burns when asked how he felt. Reid added, "It's so absolutely amazing. I can't believe it."
Prior to this event, Burns had announced that he would be leaving Subaru for the 2002 season.
The manufacturers' title was also wrapped up this weekend with the French company Peugeot taking the honors. Peugeot had a four-point lead over Ford at the start of the rally. When Ford withdrew, Peugeot had the title locked up. Even then, it helps to go out a winner -- the 2000 world champion, Marcus Grönholm won the Rally of Great Britain in his Peugeot 206 and new world champion, Burns, will be a Peugeot factory driver in 2002.
