Headlines
- Richard Burns driving a Mitsubishi Carisma GT was "so chuffeed" at winning the 1998 Safari Rally of Kenya. This is first WRC victory and demonstrates the enormous potential of this young driver. Co-driver Robert Reid had tears of joy streaming down his face: "I can't believe it. I am totally overcome."
- disappointment in the Toyota camp as Sainz exits the rally after breaking a rear strut which caused further damage

Section Winners
Section 12 - Burns, Section 13 - Vatanen, Section 14 - Kankkunen, Section 15 - Kankkunen, Section 16 - Burns
-----------------------------------------------------------
Section 12, Oltepesi - Ngong 108.12 km Start: 06:29 Notes: - Sainz's bid to overtake Juha Kankkunen (Ford) was tripped up by punctures; Sainz's left-hand front wheel rim broke in a drift 3 kms from the end of the section, and he came out very slowly, two minutes down on the Fords, and Didier Auriol had a flat rear right. Both had to do jack-and- spanner work before heading for service. - Vatanen's trip meter broke, so in thick dust he and navigator Fred Gallagher had difficulty estimating distances on long straights. - Kankkunen's rear window blew out 30 kms into the section, so his dust problem was inside the car. - Burns hit one rock very hard, but service checks confirmed he had "got away with it" with no serious damage. He also had a high-speed bird strike, but the bush bar took all the impact. "This section (a repeat of CS 2 from the first leg) was much rougher than it was two days ago".

Section 13, Hunter's Lookout - Timbuctoo 71.90 km Start: 08:41 Notes: - The Corolla's rear right shock-absorber snapped, snagged on the tyre and set the assembly ablaze. Sainz raced on, but finally had to stop and remove the wheel, and when the car got moving again the rear diff failed. Sainz arrived in service by helicopter. - Meanwhile, Ari Vatanen (Ford) had taken a full minute off leader Richard Burns (Mitsubishi) on CS13, and Burns lost a further 20 seconds in service as mechanics changed his sump- guard and inter-cooler which had been damaged by a rock and a bird on the previous section. - Didier Auriol (Toyota) had two punctures. The crew changed one and got moving again just ahead of Juha Kankkunen (Ford) who was heavily dusted. - After service, in which all four surviving team cars all changed shockabsorber - Ford's Malcolm Wilson has confirmed that Vatanen will surrender second place to him if that is the way things turn out.

Section 14, Isinya - Il Bisel 109.87 km Start: 10:07 Notes: - Burns reported a slight driveshaft noise and had lost the scoop of his roof vent, but was otherwise "going at our own speed and happy with what's happening." - Didier Auriol (Toyota) said: "The car felt too soft, so we just took it easy." - Precise details of Carlos Sainz's retirement have been clarified by the Toyota Team. First, the rear strut broke and Sainz continued. Then the tyre rubbed against the damaged strut and bodywork and caught fire. The crew stopped to remove the wheel, and because any replacement would also rub and ignite, they tried to continue on only three wheels but ultimately the car was unable to drag itself any further.

Section 15, Kajiado - Corner Baridi 48.96 km Start: 12:37 Notes: - Richard Burns and Robert Reid (Mitsubishi) came safely through CS15 still more than three minutes clear of Ari Vatanen (Ford), and it is now downhill all the way to the victory ramp, with only the 4.3 km "Super Competitive" between the British pair and their maiden WRC win. The Mitsubishi Carisma had a precautionary change of its radiator and a drive-shaft in service before CS15 and had no problems. - Vatanen's slightly faster time was accademic, as on the same downhill finish he will be asked to let Ford's main championship contender, Juha Kankkunen, move into second place - by checking in deliberately early at CS 16 to incur the necessary penalty.

Section 16, Super Special Stage, Nairobi 4.3 km Start: 13:31 Notes: - Richard Burns and Robert Reid (Mitsubishi) turned the final "Super Competitive" section into a victory lap, and added a flourish by setting fastest time, too. As they drove into the Safari history books, Reid had tears of joy streaming down his face: "I can't believe it. I am totally overcome." Burns said he was "so, so chuffed!" - Juha Kankkunen (Ford) was second fastest on the stage and took second place overall, just 25 seconds ahead of team-mate Ari Vatanen. Asked what he thought of Vatanen's Safari drive, navigator Fred Gallagher said: "Not bad...for an old guy." Vatanen won the Safari outright 15 years ago, and Gallagher has won this event three times - once with Juha Kankkunen and twice with Bjorn Waldegaard. - The winner's average speed over the 1,063 kms of competitive sections was 119 kph, with a peak single section average of 141 kph. But more significant than the actual speeds achieved, was the "all-out, flat-out, throughout" approach of the leading cars. - Safari has always been by far the longest and roughest event the World Championship, and for that reason drivers have always "paced" themselves. In 1998 there was no such reserve, and the ten-tenths pressure took its toll, even on the nigh- indestructible WR cars. - First-timers SEAT had an outstanding debut, winning the 2-litre class and finishing fifth overall through Harri Rovanpera, who comfortably held off the challenge of the Sawfish Volkswagens of Raimun Baumschlager and Kris Rosenberger. - Spain's Luis Climent (Mitsubishi) won Gp N by a huge margin, and the other Top Ten places went to Kenya's Marco Brighetti (Subaru Impreza) and Uganda's Karim Hirji (Toyota Celica)
