CLUTCH WOES END OPENING DAY EARLY FOR ATKINSON

Subaru's Chris Atkinson has been forced onto the sidelines with a clutch problem following the opening stage of Rallye de France in Corsica, round 14 of the World Rally Championship, today.

After completing the opening 32.89km stage Atkinson experienced the clutch problem on the road section between stages one and two which could not be fixed in time for the start of the second stage and he was forced to retire from the leg.

"Yesterday's shakedown was the first time I had driven on tarmac since Germany but despite only completing three runs over a short stage I was feeling comfortable behind the wheel," said Atkinson.

"The aim for today was to simply get back into the groove and feel my way. During the opening stage I took it pretty easy but I was quite happy with the time I set as it was just on a second per kilometre behind the time set by my team-mate Petter Solberg.

"After completing the opening stage the clutch began to slip on the transport section and it got very bad and we weren't able to fix it in time before the next stage forcing us to withdraw from the opening leg."

Atkinson and his West Australian co-driver Glenn Macneall will restart tomorrow under Superrally regulations which will allow them to further their experience in a tarmac event.

Tomorrow's second leg will consist of four stages across a total of 125 competitive kilometres. The first crew will begin the opening stage of the day at 9:53am.

The local time in Corsica is eight hours behind AEST.
