Final countdown for OMV Kronos Citroen WRT
The Wales Rally GB from November 29 to December 2 will be the last run to the FIA Rally World Championship this season for the OMV Kronos Citroen World Rally Team. Following a rather up-and-down year what is left is to take care of a conciliatory WRC-finish on the British isle. And the signs point in that direction since Manfred Stohl and Ilka Minor scored points each time during the last four years (7th, 8th, 5th and 2nd). In 2006 they possibly completed the best rally of their career when finishing in second place.
Attack is the best defense
Manfred Stohl had to experienced all ups and downs of a rally career this season. Often the 35-year-old OMV driver fought technical problems in vain but also proved his speed with special stage best-times. But the hoped for podium place over which the OMV pair Stohl/Minor had rejoiced no less than four times last year is still missing. Which shall be remedied at the Wales Rally GB. Stohl: "We will attack right from kilometre one on. This rally suits me very much as is generally known. I scored points here four times in a row and last year we were even able to put pressure on eventual winner Marcus Gronholm for quite some time. Also, I have nothing to lose anymore this year."
Decision on the last day
As opposed to many other WRC rallies the teams can expect a quite treacherous final day at the Wales Rally GB. Even though only four special stages have to be completed the SS-length measures 114,26 kilometres, after all. Stohl: "I believe that this is the longest final leg in the whole WRC. There the result could be turned completely upside down. One has to stay focused right down to the last kilometre. And if it stays dry the extremely high speed will be a criterion, as well. The rhythm of this rally nevertheless suits me and I'm eager to meet this last big challenge of the year."
Already EUR 132.630 in the OMV Move & Help account
Since this year's season of the OMV Kronos Citroen World Rally Team is under the sign of OMV Move & Help, EUR 20 will be donated to OMV Move & Help for each completed special stage kilometre. At the 15 WRC-runs completed so far, Manfred Stohl/Ilka Minor, Daniel Carlsson/Denis Giraudet and recently in Germany, Spain and Corsica also Francois Duval/Patrick Pivato have already taken in 132.630 Euro overall. In Wales further 7.200 Euro are at stake at the final run. Move & Help is the educational program by OMV for over 35.000 children and youths in cooperation with SOS Children's Village, Caritas and UNICEF.
360 special stage kilometres on 17 special stages
The Wales Rally GB will commence on Thursday (November 29) at 19.30 local time at the Cathays Park Cardiff. 17 special stages with a length of 359,54 kilometres are scheduled from Friday to Sunday (Novmeber 30 - December 2). The overall length measures exactly 1.271,94 kilometres. The whole rally will be completed on gravel. The super stage on Saturday in the Millenium Stadium is expected to be the absolute highlight. With a length of 1,1 kilometres it will be the shortest special stage in the FIA World Rally Championship. The finish line will be crossed on Sunday at 15.10 at Cathays Park Cardiff.
