Melandri planning 2017 WSBK return with Pata backing

Former World Superbike star Marco Melandri says he is planning a comeback in the series next season with backing from Yamaha title sponsor Pata.

2005 MotoGP runner-up Melandri made his WSBK debut with Yamaha in 2011, and took second in his debut season before the Japanese marque pulled its factory support.

The Italian spent a further three seasons in the production-based series on BMW and Aprilia machinery, before returning to take part in Aprilia's new MotoGP project in 2015.

Melandri was left without a ride when he left the squad after eight unsuccessful races, and failed to secure a return to WSBK despite an exploratory test with MV Agusta at Jerez last November.

Speaking to Motorsport.com at Imola, Melandri admitted he was working on a comeback to the series next year, revealing that Italian snack manufacturer Pata is interested in supporting him.

"I know Pata would like to start an interesting project [with me] next season," said the 33-year-old. "Let’s wait and see what happens, because from Pata the desire is there.

"But we must see if this applies also to the other component that would have to be part of the project [Yamaha]."

Asked if he would have liked to join the reborn Yamaha works squad this season, Melandri said: "Of course, and I am ready. I’m certain I would be as good as I was at the end of 2014 [when he won races with Aprilia].

"I wanted to race this year, but only in the right situation. After two difficult years I am no longer willing to compromise - I want to find a situation where I am motivated to do my best, otherwise it doesn’t interest me.

"I would need time to get rid of the rust, but if there was an opportunity to make this project reality, I would love for it to happen."

Melandri also clarified that securing a ride with MV Agusta, which runs a single bike for Leon Camier in the series, is not a realistic option.

"It's a closed chapter," he said. "It was just a test, nothing else."
