Laconi (Ducati Fila) Dominates Monza World Superbike Round with Double Win - Two Second Places for Toseland - Ducati Fila Riders Head the Points Table

Monza (Italy), Sunday 16 May 2004: Regis Laconi (Ducati Fila) dominated the fourth round of the World Superbike Championship at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, taking two clear wins aboard his Ducati 999 F04. The first double win of the 28 year-old Frenchman's career powers him into the lead of the championship with 120 points.

Team-mate James Toseland, who is just three points behind in the table, took home two podiums: the British rider first had to hold off a determined Vermeulen (Honda) in the first race, in which he finished second, and then McCoy (NCR Ducati) in race 2, where he finished third. With the disqualification of the Honda rider after race 2, Toseland's third became another runner-up slot.

"It's been a fantastic weekend in Monza, which is a very important race for Ducati" declared Laconi. "I'm so happy for them and for me because I take the lead of the championship. Thanks for my team, they did a great job to make me go so fast today so this win is for them. Once again I didn't make such a good start, but the bike was perfect, we chose the same tyre as race 1 and although I didn't brake as aggressively as I did in the first race, everything turned out fine."

"McCoy was riding hard in that second race but luckily we had a good set-up at the front and we were able to brake a bit deeper than him and that's what made all the difference for me really" declared Toseland. "He had more grip on the right-handers and me on the left, but it was an even and fair battle and a fantastic race. Well done to Chris and also to Regis, he's been awesome this weekend. The championship is now looking good, Regis and I are first and second. It has been fantastic racing around here, I was just a bit disappointed in having a few problems early in the weekend, but we managed to get it all together for the races."

RACE 1: 1. Laconi (Ducati Fila); 2. Toseland (Ducati Fila); 3. McCoy (NCR Ducati); 4. Vermeulen (Honda); 5. Haslam (Renegade Ducati); 6. Fuertes (Suzuki). RACE 2: 1. Laconi; 2. Toseland; 3. McCoy; 4. Haslem; 5. Corser (Petronas); 6. Borciani (DFX Ducati)..

POINTS (after 4 of 11 rounds): (Riders) 1. Laconi 120; 2. Toseland 117; 3. Chili (PSG-1 Ducati) 97; 4. McCoy 87; 5. Vermeulen 83 ; 6. Haga 69; etc. (Manufacturers) 1. Ducati 200; 2. Petronas 90; 3. Honda 83; 4. Kawasaki 48; etc.

Unlucky Lanzi (Ducati Breil) Slowed by a Puncture - Guareschi Eighth on Return to Supersport

Monza (Italy), Sunday 16 May 2004: Lorenzo Lanzi's World Supersport race at the Monza circuit today was hit by misfortune as the Ducati Breil rider punctured on lap 6 after a superb start. Rocketing away from the third row of the grid, the 22 year-old Italian was in second place at the first chicane after just a few hundred metres. For the first five laps Lanzi then demonstrated superb potential, recording the top speed on the long Monza straights and battling with riders of the calibre of Muggeridge and Charpentier (Honda).

Unfortunately on lap 6 Lanzi punctured and had to return to the pits to change his rear tyre; he then went out again but his race with the leaders was over. With two of the top 6 disqualified at the end of the race, Lanzi scored one point for fifteenth place. On his return to the category after a break of three years, team-mate Vittoriano Guareschi finished tenth at the flag and eighth in the official results after starting from thirteenth on the grid.

"I'm disappointed for the team really, because I was desperate to get a good result at Monza and because we prepared really well for the race" commented Lanzi. "I made a rocket of a start and powered into the first 'variante' in second because I knew that I couldn't lose touch with the leaders. I was lapping at the same times as the frontrunners in the early laps, the bike was going really well: the puncture was a real shame because I was holding that place easily, without taking any risks and judging by the times the other guys were lapping in at the end; I feel sure I could have got a podium. When I felt something strange at the rear I knew I'd punctured because I've experienced that before and I knew that that was it."

"I had a good time out there today after coming back to a world that no longer belongs to me!" joked Guareschi. "It was the first lap that was a real eye-opener for me, Supersport has always been a category for do-or-die riding, I'm not used to that sort of thing any more! At the end of the race although the temperature was going sky-high, I thought I could have attacked the group in front of me and I made contact a couple of times with other riders. But basically an 'old' guy returning to Supersport and scoring a tenth place is not so bad!"

RACE: 1. Muggeridge (Honda); 2. Parkes (Honda); 3. VD Goorbergh (Yamaha); 4. Charpentier (Honda); 5. Kellner (Yamaha); ... 7. Bussei (SL Racing Ducati); 8. Guareschi (Ducati Breil); ... 15. Lanzi (Ducati Breil).

POINTS (after 4 of 10 rounds): (Riders) 1. VD Goorbergh 73; 2. Muggeridge 62; 3. Curtain (Yamaha) 47; 4. Fujiwara (Suzuki) 34; 5. Parkes 33; 6. Lanzi 31. (Manufacturers) 1. Honda 84; 2. Yamaha 81; 3. Suzuki 42; 4. Ducati 39; 5. Kawasaki 8.
