SHANGHAI - An exciting qualifying session in Shanghai saw the RML-run Chevrolet Cruzes conquer the front row ahead of the penultimate round of the 2012 World Touring Car Championship.

Alain Menu took his third pole position in a row, the fourth of the season, beating teammate Yvan Muller by a mere two-hundredths of a second after an exciting battle in the closing stages of qualifying. Rob Huff took 4th spot, which gives him a grid advantage for Race 2.

Two more Chevrolets made it in the top eight, with Colin Turkington in an Aviva-livered Cruze 5th-fastest and Bamboo’s Engineering Alex MacDowall finishing the session in 8th position.

The Cruzes proved competitive on the demanding Chinese F1 track despite the unpredictable grip conditions, which posed a number of challenges to the drivers.

Sunday’s races will be key in the battle for the Drivers’ championship. Muller (349) goes into the races with a slender lead over Huff (347) thanks to the points won in qualifying.

Alain Menu, who lies in third position, has further reduced the gap to the top to 37 points following his pole. The title will be decided at the very last round of the season, in Macau in two weeks time. With a maximum of 105 points still up for grabs until the end of the season, all three Chevrolet drivers can still lay claim to the title.

Chevrolet – which has already won the Manufacturers’ championship, the third in a row – leads on 844 points, nearly 300 more than second-placed BMW (548). SEAT lies in third place on 533 points.
