Some of the biggest British stars in touring car racing will gather in London tomorrow for a press conference prior to this country’s round of the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), which takes place at Brands Hatch on 26/27July.
The press conference will take place at the designer Soho House hotel in London, where Andy Priaulx, James Thompson, and Rob Huff will meet the UK media to talk about their hopes and fears before what will be the most important race of the year for all three of them. The main battle will be on the track, but there is likely to be a war of words beforehand as the top drivers speak about their prospects.
Priaulx is gunning for a remarkable fourth consecutive WTCC title this year in his BMW 320si. Although he says that the odds are stacked against him, he will be going all-out for victory at Brands Hatch. His other task for the weekend is to demonstrate a BMW Sauber Formula 1 car in front of what is expected to be a packed crowd.
Honda driver Thompson has won the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) twice, and knows Brands Hatch like the back of his hand. Having finished second there in 2007, he is aiming firmly for the top step of the podium this year. After some bad luck at the last round of the WTCC in Portugal, the Yorkshireman will be more determined than ever to make amends once the championship gets to Britain.
Huff may be a relative newcomer to the scene, but he too has staked his claim to victory with a number of brilliant performances this year, including a win at Valencia. The Cambridge resident believes that his Chevrolet Lacetti is particularly well suited to the confines of Brands Hatch, and the Kent circuit was also the scene of his first BTCC victory in 2004.
Tickets are on sale via the Brands Hatch website with adult admission on Sunday 27 July costing 30 GBP at the gate, but only 24 GBP if you book online at www.motorsportvision.co.uk. An online weekend ticket costs 34 GBP while children aged 12 and under go free.
Grandstand seating starts at 5 GBP and the raceday pit walkabout, which opens at 09:00 on Sunday, costs 12 GBP. Advance booking is available online and from the ticket hotline on 0870 950 9000. Advance ticket purchases to watch some of the world’s closest racing close at noon on Wednesday 23 July.
