BRITAIN'S SCHUMACHER...
Every motorsport fan has heard of Michael Schumacher and his record seven World Championship titles, but did you know that there is a British racing driver who has won three prestigious world titles on the trot and is aiming for another this year? Britain's most successful driver is not Nigel Mansell or Damon Hill as many people think, but Andy Priaulx: the winner of the last three FIA World Touring Car Championships (WTCC).
The WTCC comes to the United Kingdom at Brands Hatch on 26/27 July, giving home fans a chance to see the man Autosport magazine called ‘Britain's Schumacher' in action. Priaulx, who drives for BMW, has dominated the sport in recent years but this season he faces his biggest ever fight against increasingly tough opposition.
The 33-year-old was born and bred on the island of Guernsey, where he still lives now with his wife Jo and two children. The family have rapidly achieved celebrity status; Priaulx's achievements have been recognised by two sets of commemorative Guernsey stamps, and he was recently awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.
Back home, Priaulx is to be found in the lifestyle sections as much as the sports pages and he has also been made an official ambassador for Guernsey. This year he launches his autobiography, having already been the subject of a television documentary: ‘How he became a World Champion'.
So far Priaulx may well be Britain's best-kept motorsport secret, but a victory on home ground at Brands Hatch this July, on his way to a possible fourth consecutive FIA world title, could see his status change dramatically.
