Impressive SEAT display in qualifying, taking the top five positions

The SEAT Sport team has started the 2009 FIA World Touring Car Championship in the best possible way, clinching the top five positions at the qualifying session for the starting grid of the first race of the season, that will be held tomorrow at five o'clock in the afternoon on the Curitiba racetrack. Yvan Muller led the pride of lions, followed by Jordi Gene, Gabriele Tarquini, Tiago Monteiro and Rickard Rydell, all of them separated by only 290 thousands of a second.

SEAT Sport made once again use of their best weapon, which is nothing else but team spirit, with a perfect coordination between the drivers, giving each of them the chance to set the fastest time following the slipstream of a team-mate. It was a double challenge since it was the debut of the new double-session qualifying format with the top ten drivers of the first session fighting for the top ten positions during the definitive Q2. Yvan Muller also clocked the fastest time in Q1, ahead of Jordi Gene.

But despite this spectacular result, the differences have not been that big: the top ten drivers who entered Q2 are covered by only 737 thousands of a second. This gives clear proof of the similarity between participants, at least between the three official teams of SEAT, BMW and Chevrolet.

Jaime Puig, SEAT Sport Director: " All team members know that our big aim is the manufacturers' championship and therefore we quickly agreed to let all drivers onto the track in several organised series so each of them would have at least one chance to get a good result. And we did it, so we are well positioned to fight for the victory in the first race tomorrow."

TV Schedule
Eurosport will be broadcasting both WTCC races tomorrow, at 19.00h the first (relive) and the second live at 19.45h CET.
