Honda have confirmed their participation in the 2017 World Touring Car Championship, after a strong 2016 season which saw them take the fight directly to Citroen, particularly in the early part of the season.

The team scored a best 1-2-3 result at Motegi three weeks' ago, and have taken four victories over the course of the season, with all three drivers in close contention for second in the drivers' championship behind champion elect Jose Maria Lopez.

“"The WTCC has been a fantastic platform for Honda to promote its products and values and we are delighted to be announcing our commitment to the 2017 FIA World Touring Car Championship while we are still more than two months away from the end of the current season," said Honda Europe motorsport manager William De Braekeleer.

"[The] support received for participation throughout the Honda organisation, both globally and on a national level, has also been fantastic.

"Furthermore, the enthusiasm of our customers and fans had been really exceptional this year and we would like to dedicate the continuation of our participation to them."

Honda are the second manufacturer to commit to the 2017 season after Polestar Volvo, with Lada also expected to continue.

Citroen will switch to focus on their return to the World Rally Championship next season, with Lopez joining Formula E and Yvan Muller retiring from the championship, but the French marque will maintain a privateer presence along with Chevrolet, in RML-supported Cruze TC1s.
