SEAT Sport aim to make the French connection

SEAT Sport heads to Magny-Cours for Rounds 3 and 4 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship on Sunday May 1st, hoping that last year's strong race performance at the French circuit, together with encouraging pre-season test results there earlier this year, will see the Spanish team score a podium finish. At Magny-Cours twelve months ago, Jordi Gene's SEAT Sport Toledo Cupra ran comfortably in second place until a broken battery cable forced him to retire.

Rickard Rydell was fastest at the recent WTCC test session at Magny-Cours, with Rydell, Gene and newcomer Peter Terting consistently lapping within a few tenths of a second of each other throughout the intensive pre-season test programme. The first two races of the WTCC, at Monza in Italy, saw both Jordi and Rickard score their first points of the year at a circuit which traditionally doesn't favour the Toledos and the SEAT Sport team is aware that, for them, the season really begins in France.

Rickard Rydell: "Last year, we stayed on to test at Magny-Cours on the Monday after the race weekend and we set some really competitive times. I was then fastest at the winter test, but you're never completely sure after testing -- we'll know for sure how competitive we are at lunchtime on Saturday! I was a little disappointed to leave Monza with only one point, but I'm really optimistic about Magny-Cours. It's a really good chance to have all three cars in the points for the first time."

Jordi Gene: "I think Magny-Cours was a turning point for the team last year; it was there we realized that we had the potential to win races for the first time and so I'm feeling very positive, especially after what happened to me last year. I was running in second place when I had some really bad luck, which I know won't happen again. As much as we knew Monza would be a bad circuit for us, Magny-Cours will be a very good circuit and I know all three of us can do well."

Peter Terting: "I'm really starting to work well with my engineer, Nigel Clyde, and I'm sure that my set-up will be as good as it was in Monza. I only lost out there because I lost the tow from Jordi, so I'm confident of a finish in the top six. The circuit really suits the car -- the Toledo works well in corners where there are sudden changes in direction and Magny-Cours has those -- so I have a really good feeling about the weekend."
