The Portuguese driver is enjoying his best season in WTCC to date, as he is leading the championship halfway through the season by 12 points over Volvo’s Thed Bjork.
While the title battle is the main priority for both Monteiro and Honda works team, both parties have begun to talk about extending their partnership into 2018.
"We already started to talk because my contract ends this year and there is one option [to continue] that ends in the coming days, weeks. So we already started talking", Monteiro told Motorsport.com.
"The idea is to continue with Honda in one way or the other. I have a good relation, this is my sixth year with them, I'm an ambassador for the brand in some countries and I love it."
Despite his close links with Honda, Monteiro also stated he has other options, inside and outside WTCC, for the coming season.
"It is interesting because I had many other proposals, from this championship and from others," he added. "That is good for me because I get to choose and I can talk and is nice to see that people values my work.
"It is better to have options and be able to choose rather than have nothing. We will see what happens".
