Nykjfr claimed first pole position of the year

The preparations for Sunday's two opening rounds of the FIA World Touring Car Championship went perfect for Michel Nykjfr. The Danish driver secured his first pole position of the year for race two, while he qualified as fourth fastest for the race one grid.

The aim for qualifying 1 was to get among the top ten drivers who would go on to qualifying 2, and that was exactly what happened.

"There was some pressure on in Q1. I had made a couple of attempts with some minor mistakes on most of the laps, so I decided to do a final attempt at the end, where I shaved off a tenth in each sector," Michel Nykjfr explains upon having progressed from 12th to 10th place. "I was very nervous, as I did not know whether I was in or out, but luckily I posted tenth best time to progress to Q2, but I also claimed pole position for the second of tomorrow's races."

In qualifying 2 the action hotted up, and the driver from Pole Position Denmark also managed to increase his speed.

"For Q2 I had two new and two slightly worn tyres on, so it was just a question of trailing the other drivers and post a good time. I gambled on various parts of the circuit, and I was successful. Last year I learned that it is important to increase the pressure every time you go onto the circuit, as the speed increases," Michel Nykjfr says upon claiming fourth best lap time. Not only did he do that. The Dane also ended as top independent driver as well as the best driver with a 2010 spec engine.

"We hadn't expected to be able to keep up with the drivers with the new engines, so it was just a question of doing as well as possible," he says. "I finished as top Seat driver, and it is not every day that I am faster than the two old Grand Prix drivers Tarquini and Monteiro. It is very pleasing with such a result, so we are really happy!"
