Delays, but Rydell storms to pole in Mexico
At the end of a delayed qualifying session at Mexico's Puebla circuit, it was the SEAT Sport Leon of Rickard Rydell that topped the timesheets; a performance that gives the Swedish driver his second pole position of the season. Problems with the track surface breaking up in places had earlier forced the organisers to cancel one of the two planned free practice sessions and delay qualifying until the circuit had been thoroughly swept. The work meant that track conditions were very different to those in the practice session, although most of the SEAT Sport drivers were much happier at the end of the day than they had been following practice.
The exception was Yvan Muller. After being quickest in practice, the change in conditions meant the car's set-up was no longer ideal and the Frenchman's mechanics battled to find a solution during the 30-minute session. In the end, Muller qualified 6th and is confident the team can improve the set-up still further in preparation for the two Mexican WTCC rounds. Behind Yvan, James Thompson will start Race 1 in 7th place with Jordi Gene in 8th after the SEAT Sport team was forced to change the engine in Gabriele Tarquini's car following Friday's testing session, dropping the Italian 10 places from the 8th in which he qualified. Last year's hero in Mexico, Peter Terting, will start Race 1 from outside the top 10 after struggling with an understeer problem for much of the qualifying session.
