SEAT presents the SEAT Leon EuroCup

After several successful years in different countries, next year the Supercopa SEAT Leon will be adding to its European growth with the creation of a new competition, the SEAT Leon EuroCup, which will be raced at six of the 2008 FIA World Touring Car Championship meetings in Spain, France, Portugal, Germany, England and Italy.

With this new championship, SEAT is making a valuable contribution to its involvement in touring car races since it is the only brand that offers drivers and customers all the facilities to compete from national events right up to the World Championship, all the while focussing on reduced costs. The national Supercopas, the EuroCup, the independent teams at the WTCC and the official team is the perfect itinerary for racing enthusiasts who want to reach the top.

SEAT Sport will be lending technical and commercial support at every event venue, and the new championship will be the only single-brand competition whose races get live television coverage through Eurosport, which will also be giving broad coverage to the development of the EuroCup in its Eurosport's Motorsport space.

After its sixth edition in Spain, fifth in England and Germany and the first in Italy and Hungary, over the years the Supercopa SEAT Leon has proved to be the perfect starting point for drivers who later become official drivers at the World Touring Car Championship, such as Robert Huff and Peter Terting, who made it to the WTCC from the British and German Supercopas. Oscar Nogues, Marc Carol and Florian Gruber made their debuts at the WTCC after proving their worth at the Spanish and German Supercopas. Spanish 2006 champion Oscar Nogues is one of the SEAT drivers who will be racing this weekend at the Monza circuit.

Making its official announcement today, the SEAT Leon EuroCup will be providing insights into its structure and technical and sporting rules over the next few weeks. They will be similar to the 2007 organisation, and the series will be sharing its calendar with the national Supercopa events. The same car will be used as at the 2006 and 2007 seasons, but equipped with the Kit 2008, and the best classifying drivers will be rewarded with participation at the 2009 WTCC at the wheel of a SEAT Leon unit.

Jaime Puig, SEAT Sport director: "The SEAT Leon EuroCup is the extremely satisfactory result of all the efforts made in the last six years. Thanks to highly competitive costs, we are able to offer our customers a wide range of choices to compete at different championships with a reliable, high performance, technologically advanced car, and the EuroCup will give drivers the chance to race at the same World Championship events and circuits. They will be highly entertaining spectator events, whether live at the tracks or on television thanks to Eurosport's magnificent coverage."

Marcello Lotti, of WTCC promoter KSO: "We applaud the concept of SEAT Sport's new SEAT Leon EuroCup series, and are delighted that it will race alongside the FIA WTCC. The series perfectly illustrates SEAT's dynamic and innovative brand, and the passionate approach by SEAT to motorsport, by providing drivers with a remarkable opportunity to not only compete within a challenging, televised series but have the potential to drive within the WTCC."
