SEAT celebrates its successes of 2008 and presents this season's sporting projects
SEAT president Erich Schmitt officially announced the SEAT Sport team's participation at the 2009 World Touring Car Championship.
Jordi Gene, Tiago Monteiro, Yvan Muller, Rickard Rydell and Gabriele Tarquini will defend both world titles achieved in 2008 at the wheel of the SEAT Leon TDI.
At an awards ceremony in Barcelona, SEAT rewarded its most prominent drivers at different championship events.
SEAT Sport held its first Gala awards ceremony today in Barcelona. The event signalled the end of the 2008 season, with the brand's top drivers receiving trophies in recognition of their outstanding contribution, and welcomed the arrival of the 2009 season.
The five official WTCC drivers, Jordi Gene, Yvan Muller, Tiago Monteiro, Rickard Rydell and Gabriele Tarquini, were in the spotlight this evening, although they shared it with special mention going to Tom Coronel, for winning one points-scoring race with his petrol-powered SEAT WTCC, and Pierre-Yves Corthals, who came in fourth at the Independents' Trophy.
Other award recipients at the ceremony were Oscar Nogues, winner of the first edition of the Eurocup, and Tom Boardman, Norbert Kiss and Roberto Russo, winners if the Spanish, Italian and Hungarian editions of the Supercopa, as well as the winners or top classifiers at various national championships. Likewise, a special mention went to the sponsors who lent their support to the company's sports projects.

SEAT president Erich Schmitt closed the ceremony by officially announcing the SEAT Sport team's participation at the 2009 WTCC, which will have the same structure and driver roster who won both world titles.
Erich Schmitt: "I am very proud of the successes achieved by our team and am pleased to announce that SEAT will continue with its racing activities in 2009. We want to defend our world championship titles with the same team and the same drivers as last year. I'd also like to thank Jaime Puig and all of the drivers because the magnificent teamwork they demonstrated last year was the key to our success. I trust it will also be a decisive factor this year."
The SEAT Sport team will begin defending their world title on Brazil's Curitiba track next 8 March.
