THE WTCC WARMS UP ITS ENGINES AT MONZA
SEAT Sport sets out its challenge to the World The FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) was officially presented to the World's press at the Monza circuit in Italy on March 22nd. The Championship's Media Day marked the starting point of the third FIA World Championship, alongside Formula 1 and the World Rally Championship, and was attended by all of the manufacturers participating in the series which is scheduled to begin at Monza on April 10th. The ten meetings - consisting of two races each - will be followed closely by large crowds and through the press and television. The pan-European sports broadcaster Eurosport has significantly increased its expenditure and is promising enhanced coverage in 2005.
SEAT Sport's participation in the series for the third straight year is an indication it has firmly established itself in this discipline. Last year saw the team record its first victory and SEAT Sport director
Jaime Puig assessed the 2005 objectives during the ceremony. This championship is going to be enjoyable and no doubt exciting; we are going up against manufacturers with proven experience as well as enthusiastic newcomers and we firmly believe in this championship and want to congratulate the promoters for their great efforts. We are also demonstrating our commitment by offering the winner of the 2005 SEAT Leon Supercopa the chance to participate in one WTCC race next year at the wheel of one of the official SEAT cars.
The Leon Supercopa has been an amazing success, and the fact that two former Supercopa racers, Peter Terting and Robert Huff, will be driving in the WTCC this year is in itself a great satisfaction for all of us."
At the same time the WTCC was being presented to the media, the participating teams began two days of testing at the Monza circuit. The three SEAT Sport drivers were preparing for the opening pair of races on a particularly fast track, where last year's ETCC races saw the team perform admirably well.
According to the SEAT Sport Team Manager Antonio Rodriguez, The testing at Monza for the opening races, and next week's testing at Imola for the fourth meeting, are designed to find the best set-up for the cars on race day. This has been the objective for our three drivers, Rickard Rydell, Jordi Gene and Peter Terting."
Jordi Gene said, We are trying out a new chassis for the first time at these test sessions, and have been concentrating on the car's set-up without striving for fantastic lap times. We'll be working the cars more thoroughly tomorrow, but bear in mind that the characteristics of the Monza circuit mean it's the least suited to our cars."
