Silverstone day 2 summary

Several race drivers joined in the second day of testing at Silverstone, as all the teams worked in extremely hot summer conditions in the pre-Grand Prix tyre test.

Mika Hakkinen returned to the wheel at McLaren alongside Darren Turner, who had tested yesterday. Hakkinen ran regularly throughout the day, along with Turner who drove into the gravel at Luffield during the afternoon. Hakkinen did one practice pit stop, and several practice starts. The team did most of the setting up behind closed doors, but they did a lot of work to the back of the car. The gearchange, particularly on Hakkinen's car, sounded very different to that of the other cars.

Ferrari did a few short runs during the day separated by long stints in the garage. Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello took over testing from Luca Badoer, and both drivers lapped near the top of the timesheets for most of the day. The team had no problems, except that their runs were often interupted by red flags.

Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher replaced Marc Gene at Williams. The team did a lot of running all day. Montoya suffered a mechanical failure during the afternoon.

Giancarlo Fisichella joined Mark Webber at Benetton. Webber soon brought the session to a halt with a mechanical failure in the morning. After a lot of running in the afternoon Fisichella suffered a mechanical problem which cut short his day.

Jordan continued testing with Riccardo Zonta and Jarno Trulli. Trulli looked very unstable through some corners and ran wide at Abbey several times. Zonta suffered a mechanical failure during the afternoon, touring past the pits before stopping out on the circuit.

Kimi Raikkonen took over at Sauber. He did some laps in the morning and the team did a lot of work on the car. He broke down on his first lap of the afternoon, and the problem took over an hour to resolve before he was able to go back out. He then ran for most of the last hour.

Andre Lotterer and Pedro de la Rosa each did a full day of testing for Jaguar. Lotterer's Formula Three teammate James Courtney and former F3 driver Narain Karthikeyan were also in the paddock. De la Rosa did a large number of laps throughout the day, like yesterday, and Lotterer did significantly more running today. Lotterer was slightly cautious, especially through slow corners and in the pitlane, but handled the car well and did not make any mistakes.

Arrows race drivers Jos Verstappen and Enrique Bernoldi took over from Johnny Herbert. Verstappen's car had an array of ariels on the rollhoop. Bernoldi did some laps during the morning and Verstappen did most of the laps in the afternoon, mostly in very short stints. At one point Jos returned to the pits with all four wheels steaming after doing a qualifying run.

Olivier Panis and test driver Takuma Sato were driving for BAR. Panis did the majority of the laps although team spent most of the day working on the cars in the garage behind screens. Shortly before lunch Panis returned to the garage without a car which had broken down. The team covered up the front and rear wings each time the cars returned to the pits.

Jean Alesi and Luciano Burti took over from Sarrazin at Prost. Alesi did most of the running and the team had no problems.

The final day of the test is tomorrow (Thursday).
