Doug Craig killed in airplane crash

Florida - It is with heavy hearts that the American Racing Drivers Club sends this notice. Lifetime member Doug Craig, 72, was killed in an airplane crash near his home in Florida Wednesday morning in his personal aircraft. Craig's wife Jane remains in critical condition at this time. Craig last competed in the Gamblers Raceway Park event in 2002. He raced midgets from the 1970's until 1995. In his last full season (1995), he earned two feature wins and finished second in the drivers and championship chase. Doug Craig was a seven time feature winner in midget competition with ARDC. He was named a lifetime member in 2001.

Craig resided in Weirsdale Florida where he raced 1200cc mini sprints with FSMA to pass the time. An avid racer, Craig spent time in the 3/4 midget division and ran TQ's for s period of time in the 1960's until the late seventies.

Craig, a four-time ATQMRA champion, was inducted into the National Old Timers Auto Racing Club Hall of Fame in 2002, he owns four wins at Boardwalk Hall in the TQ. Three of which were consecutive wins over the 1971-72 season.

Over the course of his racing career, Craig demonstrated a love of auto racing. When Craig received his NOTARC Hall of Fame Award he had counted at least 100 tracks around the country where he has seen competition, including Alaska, Arizona Vermont, Florida and Pennsylvania. In September of this year, as hurricanes faced his home, Craig made the trip to Trail-way Speedway for the final ARDC event of 2004. He was a pleasure to have in the pit area and a wealth of racing knowledge.

Craig is survived by his wife and two sons.

UPDATE: From the family

Jane is doing well. She has a c-1 vertabrae fracture, a broken right hand, and ligament damage in her left index finger. She is to be operated on her hands tomorrow (Friday) and and should be allowed to go home on Saturday. There is no spinal cord damage but she will have to wear a neck brace for three months. She is an incredible person and is our source of strength.

We are still deciding what the service plans will be for Doug. He was killed instantly and did not suffer.
