Dilley wins Dodge Dealers of Ontario 200 CASCAR race at Peterborough Speedway
PETERBOROUGH, ON - Mark Dilley led 130 of the 200 laps that made up the Dodge Dealers of Ontario 200 CASCAR Super Series race at Peterborough Speedway on Saturday night. The NTN Dodge driver started second in the field of 23, alongside his Whitlock Motorsports teammate Dave Whitlock, who led the other 70 tours of the 1/3-mile, high-banked speedway.
After leading the first 76 laps, Dilley backed off momentarily to let Whitlock out front in order to collect bonus points for leading the race. Whitlock's Avenue / NMT Dodge showed the way until lap 146, at which point Dilley ducked underneath Whitlock during a restart. He led the rest of the event; the third Super Series race of the season.
Taurus driver Kerry Micks was the final podium finisher. Micks lost a lap following a 'stop and go' penalty, but was able to recover after cutting his way through the front-runners to return himself to the lead lap. From there, the Mt. Albert, ON driver continued to push hard and came home third.
Fourth-place went to Scott Steckly, who has recorded a third and a fourth so far in the 2004 season in his ERB Pontiac. Peter Gibbons, the winner of the season's first two Super Series event, also lost a lap as a result of a 'stop and go' penalty. And like Micks, he was able to recover that lap en route to a top-five finish.
Following three events, Gibbons' Canadian Tire / Monroe Brakes Monte Carlo sits atop the point standings. Whitlock is second, ahead of three-time champion Don Thomson Jr.
Unofficial Point Standings after 3 events (top 15): 1. #1 Peter Gibbons (481 points); 2. #39 Dave Whitlock (474); 3. #4 Don Thomson Jr. (448); 4. #02 Kerry Micks (430); 5. #60 Ron Beauchamp Jr. (418); 6. #19 Brad Graham (412); 7. #64 Mark Dilley (404); 8. #22 Scott Steckly (400); 9. #23 Jeff Lapcevich (398); 10. #17 DJ Kennington (369); 11. #10 Doug Brown (364); 11. #55 Rob Graham (364); 13. #11 Ron VanEs (356); 14. #88 Dave Jacombs (354); 15. #84 J.R. Fitzpatrick (252).
